Acorn For OD Grinder
Posted: Thu Feb 16, 2023 12:03 pm
Retro a Sharp 6-18 NC OD grinder with Acorn Control. OEM NControl irratic, failing. Sharp no longer supporting; they said buy a new machine $80K, not happening.
Kept most electronical as can see in picts, replaced controller with Acorn, and Mitsubishi drive and motor to Yaskawa Sigma V. Used most of front panel hard switches and indicator lights. Modified PLC for safety interlocks to shutdown and retract in the event of loss of spindle, wheel or coolant; saves wheel and part. Wrote macros for grinding apps: reciprocation and plunge grinding. Now more versital for customer cause can customize operation for production, or special jobs.
Just went in to operation and already discussing upgrades: change recip axis to servo for precise positioning; automatic wheel dressing and w offset comp. more to come.
Fully documented retro step by step, schematics, ladder logic; ready for the next one.
Get a nice seal LCD and keyboard and it will look great.
