E stop switch and Contactor

Post by Vwfan »

I have everything laid out on my bench to do the bench test for my p.m. 940 conversion with Acorn clear pass servos and all that

My question being I never order an E stop switch and contactor and frankly I guess I’m just not sure which contactor and switch I should order any help and input would be appreciated just trying to speed Linus so I can get this controller up and running

Not sure where you are but only use NC variants ideally with 2 circuits. I use Schnieder with example on the following link

https://export.rsdelivers.com/product/s ... nc/1222311

Schnieder are not exactly budget price but similar items available on Amazon for substantially less cost
Hope this helps

As for your contactor, you should tell us what voltages you’ll be switching and if it’s single or three phase power and how many amps on the circuit to suggest something. Also, do you want a 24 volt coil or line voltage? I use both 24 volt and 120v contractors depending on what I have laying around.

As Nigel’s pointed out, you can buy good quality estop switches that are a little more money or shop Amazon or eBay. There are estop switches on Amazon that are inexpensive but just be sure to get one that has two NC contacts on it. Here’s an example for an estop:

Be sure to label your E-stop correctly! :D
This is a E-stop switch that sits on the bed of my mill. When things go bad I can hit it real fast.

to be correct, you have to use a yellow label, but the placement in the golden ratio is just a piece of art

Why does the E-stop need 2 NC contacts? I noticed the Schematic S14953 shows 2 connections? But I now see that S15117 shows 4, which one is correct or do both work?
Also if I use a 120V contactor, Can i still send 120 V AC through the coil because it then goes into Acorn's relay board.
Sorry, first time with electronics.

Two NC contacts on your estop are what's used in diagram S15117. A single NC estop switch is what's used in diagram 14953. Yes, they both work and do different functions. The relays on the Acorn relay board are rated for 250 volts so yes, you can run 120v through it. The ratings for the relays are printed right on the top of the relay.

One set of contacts is used to control the e-stop relay which disconnects power to the motors. The other set goes to an input on Acorn to signal that e-stop is pressed.
