CNC10 - computer dead - upgrade

Post by AlpineRaven »

Good Afternoon,
I got called out to a job for a broken down machine, inspected the computer and I have found that the computer is dead and no longer operational.
All I know it was Centriod CNC10 running under linux, its being controlled an CNC Router for woodworking.

My task is to upgrade the old PC to newer PC, I have narrowed down to the specs below -

Gigabyte GA-H81M-S2PV with Intel i5 4460 cpu which is reasonably priced, It has PCI slot for this PLC card.

Was talking a tech which he kinda have been helpful but not giving me full information as he is on holidays till next week. I need the machine up running asap as the production has stopped.

The tech mentioned that SSD hard disk will not work at all - can anyone confirm that? (as I have the feeling he is sticking with the old specifications and not with updated specs)

I was hoping to install 128gb Samsung EVO 840 SSD along with 4gb ram (replacing these old compact flash cards that they are constantly replacing)

I was talking to the owner of the machine he said linux is a bit of a pain, would like it upgraded to Windows to enable networking to the office via wifi.

How hard is it to upgrade from CNC10 to CNC11 with Windows 7?

What Linux distribution is the CNC10?
Thank you once again
AP

Without knowing the control serial number, I can't tell you specifically what flavor of Linux it is running. Earlier Linux controls used Redhat, then moved to OpenSuse 10.2 and currently at OpenSuse 11.2

I don't know what "tech" you are referring to but I doubt you spoke with anyone at Ajax or Centroid as they would have informed you that the Linux builds that we use are hardware specific -it's extremely unlikely that you could just pick a MB off the shelf and get it to boot and/or run properly. The current, 11.2 OpenSuse MB we are using is a Gigabyte Gigabyte GA-H81M-S2P with Intel Celeron G1840

We are using a Samsung SSD 840EVO 120GB which we sell, pre-loaded and configured for use with the above MB w/v2.73 Linux SW for $425.00

The new MB etc.. would also require a new 500W ATX PS $86.00

In general, It is pretty easy to upgrade to an MPU11 (Windows) system, it involves a new motion control board (ethernet based) $965, a legacy adapter $325 (plugs into existing fiber optics) and maybe some PLC work or new Jog Pendant but without the control serial number I can't get more specific. These MPU11 prices require that the original motion control board -which you refer to as the "PLC", be returned for software credit. Without it, add $540 for CNC11 software.
