Windows 10 Power Option Configuration

Post by Akn99 »

Hey folks,

I am installing CNC12 and running through the settings for Windows 10

Just as a heads up, it appears that most of the advanced power options including USB and hard drives settings have been removed by default as of Windows 10 version 2004 and onwards (I am currently on version 20H2) in both the Home and Pro versions - my wife (who works for Microsoft) had a version of Pro prior to 2004 and the options still showed up there - in addition only the Balanced power profile will show up

I was able to eventually get access to the required options but after trying many of the (outdated) suggestions on the web, I had to resort to running regedit to get the options enabled

I have not been able to find any easier options and I tried running powercfg from an Admin account - all to no avail

It looks to me like they are all still there in the Power and Sleep Settings under ADVANCED.I am running 20H2
Make sure your account is set to Administrator.
Also, could you post a fresh report from your machine?

Thanks Marty,

I actually saw you video last week - thanks for the content

I believe your situation is only true if you upgraded not if you do a clean install, which I did yesterday on a bare bones NUC10. Only the Balanced power profile turns up no other choices and then things go down hill from there

On a clean install, they do definitely do not appear in advanced, and if you google it you will find a large set of discussion about these options being removed - unfortunately most of the answers about how to restore them do not work, as my 4 hours spent on this problem showed yesterday :)

All the recommended advanced settings have been set to the Centroid recommendations at this point, but it took regedit tweaking to get the options to show up

Option 2 from this article worked to restore the other power plan options but you have to make sure the console session was launched explicitly as administrator (Option 1 failed) https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/110 ... -10-a.html

USB Selective Suspend can be restored base on option 2 from this link (it shows how restore as well as delete :) ) https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/100 ... ndows.html

Again Option 2 from this article will allow restoration of the “Turn off hard disk after” option (although it is not clear if this applies to SSDs)
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/657 ... ndows.html

I am hesitant normally to run anything from 3rd party sites that touches regedit, but they are pretty simple and if you do the research it shows that regedit GUIDs that are used are correct

Hope this helps someone else avoid the long afternoon I had, and if everyone else finds the options without this help ... God bless you :)

Oh one last point...

You must be logged on to an account that is designated as an Administrator, but being logged in as administrator is not sufficient to make the fixes I posted work - you must launch a console window “Command Prompt App” and ensure that you run it as Administrator (if you don't see Administrator explicitly in the header you did not do it right) by selecting that option in the right hand option window, and that you launch regedit as a command from there

Trap for young players, from the Windows Start search bar type “command” - but do not use one that shows up in the “Recent” set, or you will not get the option to run as Administrator

They removed the option to set and save screen brightness controls last year, so now my W10 laptop comes out of sleep to the same default setting, regardless of what I want it to be. Worse than that, I can't actually turn the brightness back up until several seconds after getting back to the desktop, while it gets its knickers back on. Little things!! I imagine some gormless intern in Redmond randomly decided to make that change one morning.
