Updating Trak 1440SL Lathe Control
Hi all--I'm new to the forum--I joined because I've just bought a CNC Lathe and a CNC mill, and I want to upgrade the controls on them.
I did a search on the forum for information on this topic, but didn't find anything. Hopefuly forum members might be able to help.
I'll address the lathe for now.
It is a Protrak 1440SL with a Windows 95 based operating system. The lathe was built in 2003. I got it from a medical device manufacturer who upgraded to newer machines. I've been told that this machine runs, but the controller uses 3.5" floppy disks or memory sticks.
I'd like to upgrade it to an Acorn Controller, and, if possible, install a spindle encoder on it so I can do rigid tapping, and constant surface speed. CSS is an option of Trak lathes, but I don't know if this one is set up for it. It has a 3 phase, 230 volt dual speed motor with 2.5 and 4.5 hp.
My question.. is this doable, and what would be involved to do it.
Thanks in advance.

Smitty…
How about a couple pics of the machine(s) and some of the control box?

Re: Updating Trak 1440SL Lathe Control
I don't have pictures of the machine, yet. I just got it home today, and it's all tarped up due to the (almost continual) rain we've been getting this last month.
I did get a set of manuals with it, and I made a copy of the Trak 1440SL electrical schematic, and the electrical panel.

No pictures came through. When you create a message, there are two tabs under the message box you type the message in. One says Options the other says Attachements. Use the Attachments Tab.Utah Smitty wrote: ↑Fri May 24, 2019 10:05 pm I don't have pictures of the machine, yet. I am almost betting you have DC brush servos on that lathe, but need to see one and or its lable.

Re: Updating Trak 1440SL Lathe Control
Well, let's see if the files attach this time. I clicked on "Attachments", then "Add Files". I added each of the 3 files, then clicked on "Place Inline".
They're .pdf and show electrical schematics, etc.
Hopefully you can see them, now.

Well, you figured out how to upload attachments....now pictures of the machine, servo motors and control cabinet

Re: Updating Trak 1440SL Lathe Control
I have the machine covered in plastic as it's in my partially finished shop, and I'm trying to keep dust and moisture off of it. I did get pictures of the inside of the control panel, the crossfeed drive motor, the 1440 electrical schematic, and posted the electrical cabinet layout again for ease of use.
The drive motor uses a smooth pulley and V-belts, so I would probably need to get a different motor if I wanted to add things like constant surface speed (though this was an option from Trak) and rigid tapping.
Regards,
Smitty

Re: Updating Trak 1440SL Lathe Control
Nice machine, looks very clean and lightly used. I would be inclined to use All in One DC.
Acorn can't directly drive those DC brush servos.
All in One DC could. Whether or not you would need new encoders is dependent on what encoders are in the DC Brush servos. All in One DC would allow you the ability to use dual handwheels you have in the apron.
You could use Acorn if you replace the motors and drives with AC servos like DMM Technologies DYN4 drives using their Acorn cables. You could also use Eastun which Centroid sells. DMM sells their AC servos in standard NEMA frame sizes.
Acorn would not allow the use of dual handwheels, but you could use the wireless MPG with it

Thanks, Marty. I'll look into All in One DC.
