Encoder fitment for Atrump E320 and positioning question

Post by Sportbikeryder »

Is there an encoder available for direct fitment to an Atrump E320 Bedmill?

If an encoder is installed, is there a built in command to turn and hold the spindle in a desired position?
I thought I asked this question reguarding position previously, but I couldn't find it.

Intent would be to use the Z axis for broaching internal grooves in an aluminum clutch basket for motorcycle applications. Basically Index the head, then move in a radial manner around the inside of a cylindrical part, pecking away with a broach tool to cut vertical slots inside. Index the head to the next position, and peck again (I guess this would sort of be acting like an automated shaper). This is in lieu of having a vertical rotary axis available to rotate the part itself.

This is an example of a similar part, intent would be to machine the internal items, and use a broaching / plunge cut to clean the square corners for the clutch plate ear engagement.

An E320 is usually a machining center with an umbrella-style tool changer.

As such, it does have a spindle rotation encoder, which is used by the spindle drive for orientation during tool changes.

Typically you could program M19 to orient the spindle to the tool-change orientation.

However, there is no provision for orienting and holding in any other position.

Does your machine have a CPU10-based control (e.g. an M400 or M400S, with a 5-digit serial number beginning with 1 or 2)?

Or does it have an MPU11-based control (e.g. with a 6-digit serial number beginning with 1)?

This is a 2008 Head porting machine with a trt-32, no tool changer. Control is a CNC10.
