New user - Have a question

Post by Oldtimer »

Hello all,
Purchased an Acorn board and CNC 12 pro software about four weeks ago and got it wired, bench tested and working so far without blowing anything up. I have a step learning curve ahead since I am not familiar at all with the CNC 12 software and overall function of it. Have watched a number of you tubes and got some basics down. Trying to figure it all out but would like to know if there is a CNC 12 manual specifically associated with the Acorn that includes also a section for the Wizard. The CNC 12 software I downloaded did not have a manual in the file section that says CNC 12 manual. Can only find a CNC 11 manual on the Centroid website - is there a current CNC 12 manual for download somewhere and can somebody direct me to it, please?

The other query I have regards the stepper drivers I am trying to use that were inherited from the original control panel for my mill. They are Italian - RTA - and about 15 years old but were under utilized in their previous life and still worked well. They are model GMD 02 and drive four steppers with 1.8 degree / step. The driver board allows 800 steps with dip switch selection for 1/4 - 1/2 - full step. I have the control panel powered up with one driver board connected to a stepper. Upon powering up the control panel I get the motor bump audibly and by touch of the connected stepper motor indicating it gets power. Can not get the stepper motor to move / turn manually and suspect the problem to be with the Acorn board connection labeled "enable". The stepper drive manual has no such enable reference but what I believe is the equivalent to the enable state is what the manual says under the label - CURRENT OFF INPUT - and by my deduction, it is the enable that the Acorn output provides. My reason for that is what the manual says in the explanation of CURRENT REDUCTION INPUT: When the signal is HIGH (open) drive is active. When is low (short to GND) drive is inhibited, thus motor current (and so holding torque) is turned to zero. End of quote from manual.
My question to the experts is what kind of output signal does the Acorn board sends out as the enable output - is it a HIGH as my driver boards seems to require or a LOW that prevents the stepper motor from turning? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Sorry for introducing myself in this fashion, but I am stuck right now and do know down the road I will have more questions as to help me along. I am sure with all the residing expertise in this forum I will be in good hands. Thanks.

Peter

you can invert the enable output go to the advanced tabl AXIS inversion, check only the enable boxes and see if you get movement and report back.....

Do you have any documentation at all on the drives? Wiring schematic?

Hello Marty,
Thanks for your reply. After posting, I had the ompression that it was posted in the wrong forum. Newbie mistake, sorry. Will follow what you recommended and let you know. The documentation of the drive boards I have are in printed format. The drive board model GMD 02 is not made anymore - obsolete.

My other question was about an (Acorn) specific CNC 12 manual with a section covering the Wizard. Right now I am looking at a CNC 11 manual that differs a bit in the display reverences I get with the CNC 12 program. If I had a manual specific for CNC 12 and Acorn / Wizard, I might have been able to figure it out myself but I do appreciate your help and knowledge - been quite impressed by your YouTube videos and information. Helped me a lot already getting to where I am now. Thanks Marty.

Hello Keith,
Thanks for you information. Have many if not all of the videos in your link watched and was educated by Marty's and your videos to the point that I have managed to power up my control system without a blow out so far.

I appreciate you stating that there is not a Wizard manual. But is there a CNC 12 manual, updated from the CNC 11 manual I am working with / looking at right now? I searched the downloaded CNC 12 software for a CNC 12 manual but the file that is labeled "Manual" is empty and I can not find a CNC 12 manual on the Centroid web page. Could you help me out here? Thanks.

Peter

Great! Are yours the stand alone version or the rack mount version?
Do you need help wiring them to Acorn at this point?

What kind of machine are you working on?

hello. there is not a cnc12 operator manual at the moment, we will create one when we release CNC12 for use with the Oak and Allin1DC control boards that way we have one CNC12 manual.
the cnc11 operator manual can be used as reference for Acorn CNC12, the things that don't apply have to do with encoder feedback for axis motors/positioning since Acorn is open loop, most everything else does apply to Acorn, all the actual operator sections of the CNC11 manual apply to Acorn CNC12: setting part zero's, setting tool library's, intercon programming, the supported G and M codes, running a job. digitizing, probing, utility menu, main screen, run screen, even the operators panel section applies to most of the VCP.
I'll create a Wizard manual in the next weeks and post here in the meantime this video starting at 3:13 gives an intro overview to the wizard.
