Small dc spindle

Post by 3railout »

Acorn newbie here,
So I have a small desktop 4axis cnc setup. It has a 36vdc ps for the spindle, no vfd.
Spindle controller.jpg
I have power in, power to motor. There is a toggle switch that reverses polarity/direction of the spindle and flat ribbon cable that goes to a potentiometer that controls the spindle speed.
My question is there a way to control the spindle speed/direction from the Acorn rather than manually controlling it with the motor controller?
Or how do I connect this spindle to the Acorn?
Thanks in advance.

On Off and direction with VFD Enable and VFD Direction outputs and wire the relais instead of the switch.

These small spindles are only for light milling or engraving, there is no need to change direction IMHO.

I would use a signal isolator for the potentiometer and the 0-10V spindle output from Acorn.

This looks like a modified power supply. I don't think there is enough information given to be able to tell if you can repurpose it. Does it have any model number markings? Are there other electronics with the potentiometer (more than just a resistor or capacitor)?

I can see a few possible cases here:
1. The pot directly divides the 36 volts to set the speed. No chance of controlling that with Acorn's 0-10V output. Probably not likely since most pots are rated for lower powers.
2. The pot divides 5VDC or 10VDC which is then translated to the 0-36V output. It should be possible to use the Acorn's analog output provided that the analog circuitry is isolated from the switching power supply. An isolator device may be required.

I have a similar one with 0-100V DC output.

The poti divides 5V DC
