encoder requirements

whats the max ppr you would recommend for a lathe spindle running between 0 to 3000 rpm?

You could go to 5000 ppr (lines) or more, but 1024 or 2000 or 2048 would work just fine.

Depends on the encoder and its max. response frequency

For the Omron e6b2-cwz1x 2000p/r 3000rpm is the max speed
For the Omron e6b2-cwz1x 1000p/r 6000rpm is the max speed

right the Omron e6b2-cwz1x 2000, I see these everywhere on ebay/aliexpress ect but is anyone actually using the chinese versions on production machines? I was favoring a 5000ppr German made second hand over it but wasn't sure the pulse count was too high to get laggy in software.

no problem for Acorn, but the encoder must have a response frequency good for 5000ppr/3000rpm

I have only a 400ppr Encoder on my mill, but rigid tapping works perfect, I run it on tapping up to 3000 rpm.

No need for a very high resolution encoder for tapping.

Thanks Uwe, I now get the frequency relation thanks:) I should also clarify its for a lathe spindle. But of course ultimate goal here is for ridged tapping also.

I have an Omron e6b2-cwz1x 1000p/r on my lathe, because I need it to work up to 4200 rpm.

Rigid tapping and threading with high rpm also perfect.

On my professional CNC lathes are two encoders, the one with very high resolution is only for C-axis use.

Uwe, great. Higher rpms sounds more usable to me than a c axis at the moment. Did you go with genuine omron encoders or the cheaper version that i can see for around 30$ on aliexpress? --doesnt seem like a polite question to ask oh dear:/

The one on my mill is SFencoder for 45$
The one on the lathe Omron would be for 25$

But on my work we have the same Omrons for 290$ and even with a look inside they are looking exactly the same.

If I would spend more for an encoder I would get one Centroid sells, way better response frequency and mechanical also good for much higher rpms.
