Yep, I pulled the cover off to take a peek at the inside of the encoder. I also got a message from the Ebay seller.
See what surprising info I got out of our discussion...

Hi Marty. Question: I'm told that when it comes to spindle encoders, it is possible to have too many pulses per revolution and that at a given RPM the encoders stop reading correctly. What light can you shed on that topic?
Also - do you know how setup the forum profile so you get email notifications?
Thanks,
-Franco

Hey Brad,
If you go to the user control panel (click on your username top right), then board preferences, then edit posting defaults...notify me on replies. I'm pretty sure that's what I did. Maybe also look at edit notification options.

Most encoders have an RPM rating. You'd need to check their cut sheet. The Chinese Omron is a crap shoot. Centroid recommends a 2000 line encoder. (8000 in quadrature)

My seller admitted the omron encoder is fake and refunded me!

He offered to do the same. But I decline. I pretty much knew what I was getting when I bought it.
It did "work"

I plan on using one on my DM-3000 Lathe conversion that I hope to start early next year.

Will do Marty.
Having to make new ClearPath servo mounts for both the X & Z axis and this X Axis layout will only have a 4:1 (ClearPath : Lead Screw) ratio.
I'd like to have a 10:1 ratio but you'd have to modify the existing lead screw mount and I don't want to do that. I do think the 4:1 ratio will work fine with the ClearPath servos I already have.
In this design the ClearPath timing belt pulley is 18 tooth and the Lead Screw is 72 tooth.
