Digitizing stops on its own "Digitizing Cancelled"

Post by Wittway »

I purchased and set up a mechanical probe for my mill.
I've used it without issue to edge find, part zero, bore locate and most of the other probe routines.works great.
I calibrated the probe diameter and pre travel, measures rings within 0.005mm.

I need to make a digitize of a contour (D shaped plate about 180mm x 70mm, no special features, pretty linear and gentle radi) and have been having difficulty getting the system to fully complete the perimeter measurements. It has been random where it stops. I have no idea why it will not complete the cycle. I saw a post from someone that was having a similar issue but I did not see where there was a resolution.

I look at the data file that should have data from what was captured and all I see is about 30 or 40 lines of data points,if that, and all from the area that the "cancelled" occurred.

If anyone has some insight to this issue and what could be causing it or if I am doing something incorrect to get this to fully digitize and end normally I would appreciate that.

I am running the CNC12 Pro, I do not have the digitizing bundle but the person at centroid said I should be fine to do this with the 2500 point limit in the pro. Is it possible that I am exceeding that limit and that is what is killing the routine?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Digitizing stops on its own "Digitizing Cancelled"

It is a simple mechanical Engraving Bit .com probe.

The event occurred at the very end. Probed successfully through 1/2 the part. Was running and then finally stopped. Said ditigizing cancelled” and Probe tripped (was against the part I was doing the contour on)
The rest of the errors are from me playing around earlier and the prior day.

As I said, have not had any issue with it probing bores multiple times and edge finding.

I will say after some investigation that I am running clear path servos without pull up resistors (which I will install and try again)
No idea if they is part of the issue or not but I will get them installed as a next step.

I just tried to install the 100 ohm to 5v pull up resistors and that proved to be an issue. After restart the drives would not move at all. I clipped them to get back to the straight wires and it home’s again and is back to normal.
No clue what is up with the pull up resistors. Square 1.

FYI the machine was probing the contour without issue from when I started at 19:59 in the log to 20:15 then it says Digitizing Cancelled and the machine stops. I’ve not stopped it, just on its own decided to stop.

Some pics of the controller and electronics, not sure it helps...
After I cut the pull-ups.

Is there any way to tell what actually cancelled the probe routine? Crash, button push etc?

the probe stuck message means that the probe is not clearing the tripped state when the digitizing routine pulls back the specified distance to clear the probe, (which is typical of probes not designed for actual digitizing).

Thanks Keith,

That said, Can I have the pull back be increased to 2mm or??

The system is running most of the part contours and then stops.

Is there a parameter that I can adjust to increase that pull back?

hi.
page 24 of the KP-3 manual. https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... _probe.pdf
and that info is also repeated in the CNC12 operator manual as well.
please buy a KP-3 you'll love it and won't be chasing your tail :-)

10-4 that. Thanks.
I’ll look at replacing this one. I appreciate the help and support you folks give.

So a quick update...
Some additional work to get the data I needed since I don't have a KP-3 yet...

I really do not think the issue I am having is really the fault of the probe, albeit an inexpensive mechanical probe.

The machine will stop probing at random. says "moving" on the status window but it is not moving to the next step, just idle. Time ticking on the elapsed time window but nothing going on. The probe is not stuck, in fact it is usually away from the part and not triggered. just does not go on to the next step in the sequence.

I got to thinking maybe noise...? so I added an additional ground from the controller to the machine frame. Shut the spindle VFD off. No change.

What is odd is that while there is no message I can get the routine to continue with a tap of any key on the keyboard or even just switch the axis selector or step multiplier on the wireless MPG.

It will continue on like nothing happened, I can let it run and then cancel the digitizing and get my data from the CAM file.

Sometimes the data set is resetting though, will run / stop / run / stop and if I do not cancel after a couple of those cycles the CAM file only has the last few points. Pretty strange.

If you say that this is 100% due to the probe and I should get the KP3 (which I will most likely do because I do want a better quality probe) and this is still happening then what? I've spent a bunch and gotten now a nicer probe but same issue and it will cost me a good bit to find that out.

I am happy to pay for support to get this working as it is a valuable feature to me. Happy to pay for the digitizing package upgrade as well if I know it will work without stopping every 30 points or so. Just would like to know why this is happening before I drop money throwing more cash at a new device.

I saw a thread where someone else was having similar issues with the machine stopping during the digitizing but never saw that there was finally a resolution or cause / effect understanding of the problem. Seems like I an experiencing the same issues.
