Thanks Marty, I'm starting to think also the moral of this story is to buy supported equipment like you said. Hopefully we can find someone who has had luck programming no name drives though...
If not, Instead of buying new drives I think ill try to coax all the signals into an Arduino to speak to the acorn board.
