Trouble Setting Up DB-25 Connections on Leadshine-Like Motors (Solved)

Post by GBCues »

Hey Guys,
I recently bought StepperOnline CL57T controllers and 23HS41-4004D-E1000 motors to rebuild one of my CNC machines. These are "Designed by StepperOnline and Manufactured by LeadShine" according to the user manual. They are very much like the KL-5080H's that many are using.
After the usual starts, stops, and backups I have both motors running - but only when connected to the Screw Terminals. I cannot get any movement out of them when I use the DB-25 connections.
I have attached Reports for both configurations, some screen shots of the Wizard pages, and pictures of how they are connected in the control cabinet.
I used the Rev4 Multiple Leadshine CS-D1008 schematic to connect.
Can you take a look and tell me what I might be doing wrong?
Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks
Gary

Forget my original dumb question if you read it. Also just curious why you didn't want to use the screw terminals if they are working hooked up to the screw terminals? I personally don't remember if there was a advantage to one vs the other, I just used the screw terminals with my install since it worked.

BTW I originally was asking about the db25 custom mapping being turned off. I personally haven't used it so I didn't know if it should be on or off.

The only question I would have is if you maybe don't need 5volts going to the drivers when using the db25? I don't think you need it, but I could definitely be wrong. I'm sure someone will chime in and help you out.

Dan,
I want to use the DB-25 connections for a couple of reasons:
1) All of the schematics for the Leadshine and KL-5080H drives show the DB-25 connections being used
2) Gary Campbell in his video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLOtXTOSUWo noted at 1:30 that he had reliability problems on one of his Acorn installations when using the screw terminals. He looked at the signal with an oscilloscope and saw problems. The signals were much cleaner when using the DB-25 connections.
Thanks for your reply,
Gary

Oh ok, I figured there must have been a reason. I was looking at your wiring and do you have the 5v com going to the com on the Acorn board? I'm not sure why it would work with the screw terminals if you don't, but it's just something I think I noticed that might be wrong with your wiring. Also I think there's a problem if you don't use the dual voltage power supply that was provided with the Acorn, if I remember correctly. Maybe email Centroid or search the forum to verify, but I'm pretty sure I read about it when I first built my router.

BTW I think I finally traced your wiring and it looks right to me from whatI can see. Maybe the wizard didn't update the config file? I'm sure someone will look at your file and tell you what's going on. Sorry I couldn't help I personally haven't used the db25 with the latest wizard. I used it on 4.12 and it was different to set up back then. I'm sure it's something super simple.

Are you somehow trying to use the enables? The drives should be enabled normally without connection. Temporarily disconnect the enables from Acorn and see if you get movement.
When you are connected to the DB25, are the motor rotors locked?

Hi Marty,
Thanks for picking this up. I have unchecked "Enable" and disconnected them from the Acorn.
Now when I click on Z-, the motor 2 spins clockwise continuously until I click Reset or Z+. If I click and hold Z+, the motor spins clockwise, but stops when I release the mouse button - weird.
There is no movement on the X motor regardless of which button I press, X+ or X-.
Both motors lock when the Acorn is powered up.
There is no FAULT indication for either motor when trying to run in any direction.
Not to complicate things, but to give you complete information. I do not have Input 1 defined for anything, but when I use the Screw Connections, the motors do not turn if Input 1 is not connected to Common.
When I configure for DB-25 connections, and I disconnect Input 1 from the Acorn, the motors do not turn.
New Report and pictures/screen shots attached.
Thanks for your help,
Gary

Gary,
are the pins on the db25 breakout board male?
if so bypass the cable and connect directly to the acorn
and see if it works correctly maybe something wrong with the cable??

Would you please take ONE axis (X). Disconnect the other stepper drives completely
Wire Drive PUL+ to DB25 pin 2
Wire Drive PUL- to DB25 pin 18
Wire Drive DIR+ to DB25 pn 3
Wire Drive DIR- to DB25 Pin 19

Do not connect the ENA+ or ENA- to anything
Test movement on X axis only.
Report back please

By the way, I like these breakout boards much better than what you have there. I remove the 4/40 nuts and use 4/40 screws to attach them to Acorn. Drill the holes out to accomodate the 4/40 screw

Marty,
This configuration is working MUCH better. Motor turns clockwise and counter-clockwise correctly with no run-ons like I was getting.
FWIW I had a DB-25 breakout much like the one you referenced, I was simply using the other one as it as easier to get to while I was still bread-boarding this configuration out. I used it in the attached pictures.
I have attached all the supporting documentation.
I presume that the next step is to wire up the second controller and motor. I'll wait for confirmation.
Let me know what else you would like to try or see.
As always, THANKS!
Gary
