is this vfd suited to mill turn axis drive for small diy lathe build?
ive been thinking towards something along these lines for a vfd that can control both turning function and positioning/low rpm rotation for c axis function
would this unit be able to be connected to the acorn or oak board using its com port or would it be only suited to the 0-10v input?
still new to the electrical side of cncs so its all a big learning curve to figure out what best suits my application .
thanks daniel

You may need to connect both a drive motor (via vfd) for the spindle, as well as a servo to use for precise spindle positioning.

Re: is this vfd suited to mill turn axis drive for small diy lathe build?
this was my intial plan also but then someone said i may have issues with having to disconnect the function/drive of the motor not in function
ie via clutch or some sort of mechanical coupling when spindles running the servo is free
or when servo is running the spindle drive is disengaged.
this vfd seems to be able to do everything i require in one unit just not sure if/how centroid would control it for both direction/speed and fine movement & braked function to suit c axis milling mode..
the suitable teco motors can have an electromagnet brake bolted on the back also.

The normal way you would *try* to use a VFD to do both would be to use encoder feedback to the VFD and a position control mode.
This usually requires an add-on card for the VFD (the a510 looks similar and appears to have such an option)
.
Unfortunately, acorn only does step + direction mode, which would be somewhat annoying to convert into something the a510 can use for fine movement. It's certainly possible, but at that point, you have built a significant part of a servo drive
(Something like the Oak board can do analog speed control + encoder feedback, which is pretty much exactly what most VFD's want)

thanks dannyb
i realised the acorn would be under specd once i watched afew more youtube videos and looked over the specs again,
ill probably still start with an acorn and be abit less ambitous with my wants then upgrade to the oak and the acorn can go onto a plasma table or another project.
thankls again
