hello

Finally got my Tree J325 Centroid DC310 DIY up and running. 2 questions / recommendations

Currently I don't have any spindle speed signal to the M39.
Where on the DC310B should that input go to? ... I can see where the output is from the Unidrive SP VFD ... just don't know where this signal should go in.

Secondly what misting system do people recommend ... I'm not going to be doing high volume work but would love to have something tied in to the Centroid.

By "spindle speed signal" do you mean a pass-through of the spindle encoder?

If so, you connect it to an encoder input (4th, 5th or 6th) to the CPU10 board in the PC (not to the DC3IO). Then set Parameters 34, 35 and 78 to match the encoder, the connection, and your preferences.

The last report I saw from you had P34 = 4096, P35 = 5. That would work for a 1024-line (4096-count) encoder, which counts up as the spindle turns clockwise, connected to input #6 on the CPU10 board. If you want to see actual spindle speed (encoder feedback) in the status window on the control screen, then set P78 = 1.


Or do you mean an analog signal generated by the Unidrive?

If so, you do not connect it. The control has no need or ability to use such a signal.

For misters, I prefer FogBuster http://www.fogbuster.com/. Doesn't fog up the shop the way coolmist does.

Yes ... I'd like to see the Spindle encoder feedback in the status window - Currently if I se P78 = 1, I see the '0' I don't get any feedback when the spindle turns.

How do I figure out which encoder input my spindle is attached to? In the PID screen I dob't see any action on 4 or 5 when I run the spindle - nor do I see the F8 Drive tab

I've attached todays report and a couple of screenshots of menus

Having parameter 35 set to 5 makes no sense for your system as that tells the control that the spindle encoder is installed onto the 6th encoder port which is on an SD3. The SD3 is an AC system and your system is a DC system. If your spindle encoder is physically connected to the 4th encoder input, then parameter 35 needs to be set to 3. If it's physically connected to the 5th encoder input, then parameter 35 needs to be set to 4.

Thanks for the quick response, and I apologize for my N00B questions.

I'd already tired P35 on 3 & 4

How do I visually check for the physical connection - see attached - I have 3 serial connectors on axis 1-3 nothing in 4-5. Fiber has 1-5 attached. The silver serial port goes out to the M39.

I toggled P35 through all options - with no change to the DRO spindle speed output.

I do have spindle control from the Pendant - both by running a program and manual spindle control.

also looking at the PID UI ... I don't see any change on 4-5 axis when I run the spindle.

Looking at your photo, there isn't a spindle encoder connected to the PC so setting parameter 35 to anything will not do anything. Please verify that you actually have a spindle encoder that is geared 1-to-1 with the spindle on the machine. If you do, there should be a cable from that encoder that should have a DB9 connector similar to the X, Y, and Z axis encoders.

Hmmm - I know I'm new to CNC but I've been around PCs for quite a few years...

The spindle is controlled by a Unicode SP 2203 VFD - I see no direct connection between the PC and the VFD

There is a DB8 like connector on the Unidrive but it goes out to the Spindle. There are various terminals on the VFD which are connected directly to the DC310 ... The only non XYZ DB8 connection from the PC to the DC310 is via the fiber optics. If I look at the wiring diagram I have for this system I don't see any connection between the spindle inverter and the PC.

Question, if there's no spindle encoder connected to the PC - where is the signal coming from to 'run' the spindle in either a program or in manual mode?

The spindle control to the VFD is via the DC3IO. The PC sends the information down to the DC3IO and the DC3IO turns on the desired outputs to the VFD as well as the analog speed request. The analog speed request is an open loop system based on the commanded spindle speed. Let's say that you have the Maximum Spindle Speed field set to 10,000 in the Control Configuration menu. To get to that menu, from the main screen press F1(Setup)->F3(Config)->default password is 137->F1(Cntrl). Let's say you command a speed of 5,000rpm. The DC3IO will send 5VDC to the VFD. The VFD needs to be programmed so that when it sees 5VDC, it will spin the spindle at 5,000rpm. When you command a speed of 7,500rpm, the DC3IO will send 7.5VDC to the VFD and so on. On the main page of the CNC software there is a field that shows the spindle speed. If there isn't a spindle encoder installed into the system, the speed that is displayed is just the speed that is commanded. However, if the system has a spindle encoder installed, that speed that is displayed could be set to the actual spindle speed that is seen by the spindle encoder by setting parameter 78 to 1. The spindle voltage sent to the VFD will still be based on the spindle speed that is commanded in the program, or MDI, or using the jog panel buttons when in Manual mode.

hey thanks for the reply .....

I get what you're describing and I'd already measured the voltages across the Analog input signals. Everything there is ok 1500rpm = 2.5VDC etc.

Again sorry for the N00B questions.

P78 is set to 1 - Based on your explanation I should be seeing either actual Spindle Speed or Programmed spindle speed based on the 0-10VDC signal. I don't see any indicated spindle speed on the main screen when I use either a program or manual to spin up the spindle.

My understanding was that he VFD replaced the Spindle Encoder. If not (insert dumb question) is the 'spindle encoder' a piece of software or a piece of hardware - if it's hardware where do I need to look for it and what does it look like. :)

Having an accurate spindle speed indication would be great.
