Lathe in chucker mode. How to stop Acorn slamming tools into part?

I've got a Sherline chucker lathe that I'm running on Acorn. I've been cutting the part with one tool then going to drill it. However on the transfer between tools despite knowing where the part is and where the drill in Acorn keeps trying to slam the drill into the part (along the x axis). How do I stop this. Is the some way to switch to chucker mode or something.

Unless you tell it otherwise, CNC12 will move directly to your tool change point from the last position while changing tools. You will need to manually add a move between the previous operation and the new tool to move the carriage to a position where it will clear the part before the toolchange.
You don't say how you are creating your program, but in Intercon, many cycles have a Pre/Post Cycle Pos. entry where you can enter this "safe" position. You can also use F10 Other/F2 M&G Code to manually enter the move to safe before the toolchange.

Sorry for asking but how do I move it to a safe "x" position before it moves as there is no y position in line with the spindle I can move it to that wont result in a collision.

Perhaps some pictures, a copy of your program and a report detailing the problem would help. I'm unaware of any Sherline lathes having a Y axis. Most are just 2-axis lathes: X and Z.

You're thinking about switching from a profiling tool to a boring tool, and then moving to a safe z position.
Instead, after the cut, move your profiling tool to a position on Z that will be safe and then command the tool change.
Not sure if this is gang tooling or a turret, but the bottom line is you need to command it to return to a safe Z before switching tools.
