wanting to retrofit 4x8 Multicam

Post by PhilipS »

Hey guys new to forums...
I recently purchased a 2003 Multicam MG 103 router for $4000 that was missing the pc but looks to be in good mechanical shape. I would like to update to a centroid controller it has nema 34 stepper motors on it so I suppose I will stick with steppers I would like to change out the spindle to a single phase ATC. Any suggestions on where to source everything from? I was thinking of contacting cnc4pc talking to them about putting together a complete package (or any suggestions) I don't mind spending extra to get more of a complete package any help would be apricated.
Thanks Philip.

Welcome. I have done a few multicam's and wrapping up an axyz right now. Does it have the pacific scientific 6410 Drivers? You can run a 3 phase spindle from single phase, as is, and you loose around 20% of your spindle hp. It depends on what voltage it is set up for, if that is an option. You can buy a larger rated VfD if you have issues or want full power. They have a good dc power supply and I reuse those. You can buy kits with motors and all, if they will fit the length, but if you want to reuse a lot of your parts, it is a DIY project. It depends on if you have more time, or money to invest.

Hey Ken I believe it does have 6410 drivers I will check to be 100% positive next time I'm over where it's being stored. I didn't know you could run a 3 phase spindle on single phase power. It is a 220V machine. I'll try running it and see if the loss in power makes enough difference to justify the cost of replacing the VFD I would like to eventually upgrade to an ATC. As cheap as the machine was I don't mind spending a good amount on it to get it in good working order. Do you typically replace the motors and drivers and if so what do you use?

I was able to make this one run VERY smooth with the 6410's and Vexta steppers.it came with. I'm pleased with it. Most will advise clearpath servo's and there are some suggested links up higher on this forum page. I have run and wired several other servo driven machines, but not the one most here are using. Changing proxy switches will be a must. Most of the machine usually runs on 220 single phase. You have to find out whick is the 3rd leg of the power that only goes to the vfd, and that's the one you don't use. I try to evaluate what works and how well, before ripping things apart. It takes me over a month and I have a mechanical/electrical background. It is very satisfying for me, but it can be very frustrating as well.

Thanks a lot for the advice I’ll check back once I start the process.
