Pre-sales technical question
Hi all,
I have recently purchase a CNC router with a tool changer that was custom built to machine ceramics for making teeth. The mechanics for this are over built and at one time so were the drive electronics. It has a Delta Tau Clipper board for control and uses Delta servo drivers along with Delta AC motors. I want to replace the Clipper board as the software I have to drive the board was custom made to carve teeth and the development software from Delta Tau is costly and cumbersome. I would literally have to re-invent the wheel to use it with the existing controller. No turn key solutions like Centroid.
My question is should I buy the Acorn board which as I understand can control the motors through the existing Delta servo's but not in closed loop mode or should I go with the Oak? The machine is capable of milling Aluminum.
Thanks
Bill

Re: Pre-sales technical question
I'm not an expert on these motors or drives but the decision can come down to one simple thing, can these delta Servo Drives take step and direction commands from an Acorn or do you need an Oak controller that is made to drive servos with closed loop feedback.uses Delta servo drivers along with Delta AC motor

Re: Pre-sales technical question
I should clarify and I believe this Delta driver supports step and direction. It is a Delta ASDA-B2

Re: Pre-sales technical question
ASDA-B2 can accept step and direction (from ACORN) or AB quadrature (from Oak). If the control can detect position errors (like Oak), it adds some peace of mind. Since not many requirements were listed, I will say either one will do the job.

Re: Pre-sales technical question
Pictures are worth a thousand words. PLEASE take the time to post pictures of the machine and the tool changer.
Centroid's Engineer just confirmed the Delta drives can be configured to take step and direction signals.
The drives will close the servo loop. But yes, Acorn is an open loop control.
Frankly, if it were me, I would try Acorn first with the original drives. I think you will find it acceptable.
You could upgrade to Oak later.
What is the intended use of the machine? Hobby or production?
Marty

Re: Pre-sales technical question
i've run deltas with acorn on several large cnc routers with great success. they work great and provide a nice Hybrid closed loop solution with Acorn. They are easy to setup and get going and the wiring and configuration of the delta's with Acorn is fully documented and sorted. slam dunk no brainer.

Re: Pre-sales technical question
Hi,
Thanks for your responses and as requested here are some photos of the cabinet and the unit itself. As mentioned previously it has a Delta Tau Clipper board for control going to the Delta ASD-B2-0421-B drives. The router was built for machining ceramic teeth and is incredibly well built. They used custom working holding for teeth which I didn't get so I will have to come up with a solution for this as well. It has a tool changer and a 4KW motor.
Thanks
Bill
