Lost Y Axis!

Hello all, I'm in the process of converting a LMS high torque mini mill to cnc. Im using the Rev 4 board, hbs57 drivers knockoffs. I had the X,Y, Z axis moving and I moved onto other parts of the project. Its now time to set ball screw turns per inch and my Y axis doesn't work! I searched on the forum and it stated that if their is a readout on cnc12 for the axis the controller is working (which I have). I guess the problem is I verified there is no issues on the driver/motor side because I put the X axis control signal plug from acorn into the Y driver and my Y axis works fine. (i also switched just the pul- and dir- wires from the x and y drivers maybe the plug was bad, but the x axis wires from acorn were able to control the Y driver, but the Y axis wires from acorn were not able to control the X driver) Thinking it was maybe a software issue i updated from V4.18 to V4.5 and tested the axis before restoring report. No joy. I measured voltage between pul- and dir-. My Y axis when going Y+ jumps to 200mv, then drops and varies from 5mv to 90mv then stays like that when you let off. Y- measured 4.625v so i know the acorn is doing something. I appreciate any feedback! Thanks

When you loose something, it helps to look in the last place you had it. We'll need more information to provide substantive help.

I'm assuming adding a report does not matter because with the 4.5 update it had stock settings and still had a problem?
Using a DB25 breakout to connect the drivers to acorn. Any additional info that could be helpful? I'm starting to think the controller is bad?

I'm going to try to connect the drive up in this way tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. Any thoughts would be great!

I wired it like the second schematic posted with no help. Just to see what would happen i enabled the 4th axis and connected step 4 to pul- and direction 4 to dir - on the driver and the axis worked. Here is how its wired:

Is my Y axis broken on my controller? If so is there any way I can make the 4th axis my Y axis to get it running? :shock: :shock: :shock:

just to eliminate the possibility that one of the PINs 6 or 7 is bad on the breakout board, do the following

- go into the Wizard -> DB25 Connector Mapping"
- turn on "Enable DB25 custom PIN mapping
- Exchange Step 3 with Step 4 and Dir 3 with Dir 4
- save configuration
- restart Acorn and CNC12
- try again and report back

YES! A CURRENT Report is extremely important.
I loaded your report on my bench test rig....
First, you must have restored a report from an earlier version.
Not a good idea in this case. Take screen shots of all your Wizard Screens.
Use Windows control panel to uninstall CNC12
Remove the CNCM Directory
Then do a FRESH install
Open the Wizard, working from TOP to bottom
Select the closest drive type to yours if not listed and go to the bottom of that screen and click LOAD
THen work your way down.
You are using DB25, but when I go into the DB25 screen it is showing SCREW TERMINALS.
Change to DB25.

Also, to be clear, when you have trouble with one axis, swap the drive/motor with a known working axis. See if the problem stays with the suspect drive/motor or stays with the suspect axis. TRIPLE check all your MOTOR to drive connections and your drive to DB25 breakout board connections. Make sure the breakout board is fully seated in Acorn and attached to acorn with 4-40 screws.

Thankyou for the advice Marty undownloaded and reloaded a new CNC12 v4.5 via your instructions but unfortunately it didn't help

Swissi, using your advice:

- restart Acorn and CNC12

I found that the pins used on the db25 to control the y axis (pin 4 for step 2, and pin 5 for dir 2) were not working. I mapped Step 2 to pin 16 and Dir 2 to Pin 17 and Eurika!

I learned alot through this process and I appriciate all the help given. I really thought i was going to buy a new controller. Its pretty cool the controller allows you to remap things, what a great feature!!!

Just as a side note I had to weld the Z bracket while it was on the machine and I think that is what caused the damage. I will be unplugging all of my drives and controls if i ever have to weld anything near a CNC again!

I'm not sure if i should start a new thread or not but maybe you guys could point me in the right direction. I need to set Turns per Inch on the ballscrews and would like to get .001 or better accuracy. I'm not sure if I want to spend a minimum of $400 on a cheaper ebay DRO, is that my only option to get the mill to get that kind of precision?
