Awesome! I hope this helps people with their Acorn CNC conversion projects. The Stepperonline folks seem like decent people and the drives, motors and power supplies that I've purchased from them come across as a quality product.

Interesting, would these be better than clearpath servos in NEMA 34 if you can connect the encoder to Acorn? I noticed in the video Franco has the encoders connected but in the docs attached the encoders aren't connected.

Clearpath SDSK are a little better choice.
But hybrid closed loop drive and motors are ok too, so long as you size them correctly to your application and wire them up correctly...

ONE axis at a time ON the bench.....

Thanks Marty

The stepperonline drives are more sympathetic to our current exchange rate than the clearpaths so was just making sure they weren't inferior in any way. Might buy 1 axis worth from stepperonline and see how they perform.

Cheers

They are inferior in one major way: You are talking about steppers vs. servos. Although they can and will do the same job, they are two different classes of products. Different price class too

Thanks Gary, interesting slant on that. I need to stop considering $$$ and just look at what would be best to use and own that would make my machine better.

Cheers

You need to size the motors to the machine. Steppers work fine if they are sized correctly and given a margin of 20-30% above what the machine's design calls for.

Motors have differenct torque curve characteristics too.

Your budget definitely plays a role in your conversion. I like closed loop anything. Closed loop steppers are better than open loop steppers. Because their drives will fault if they can't keep position and alarm the control. But they cost 2-3x as much as a stepper. You can go down in size because of the safety factor I mentioned above. The safety factor is there to help ensure the open loop stepper can provide the expected power without losing steps.
The closed loop system will ensure it will. This is what Clearpath purports in their advertisements. The safety margin does not have to be as large or there at all, so you can buy a smaller motor.

What YOU plan on doing with the machine also plays a part in sizing motors.

For the SOL CL57Y this shows header instead of DB25.

I see this is using 24V signal.

I had it that way, and was advised to move to DB25.

Which is best?

Rob.

Of course there are a few exceptions, but for the most part think of DB25 = Stepper drives (especially Chinese) and the step & direction header terminals as servo drives.
