I am the proud owner new owner of an OAK board, with PLCADD1616 card for tool changer control.

I will be using this with three 1kW Yaskawa Sigma 5 servos and amplifiers to set up a new CNC milling machine.

So far I have just set out to bench test the OAK board per the Oak Install Manual.

I was getting stuck at the bench test step where you are instructed to enter MDI mode and enter commands to test the voltage of the analog output for the spindle control. I was getting an error message fault:

"9061 mini PLC1 communication failure"

that would prevent entry into MDI mode. It didn't matter if i had the PLCADD1616 plugged into the oak board or not. Anyway i finally realized that the PLCADD1616 board was not getting power. There is a jumper on the 1616 that you can change to get power from either header H3 (the cable that connects to the Oak board) or from H6 (a terminal block on the 1616 with connections of com and +5V DC). I used the jumper to select power from the oak board and then things worked perfectly in the bench test.

Here is my power supply question:
In the manual for the PLCADD1616 it says the minimum power requirement is 5V, 1.3A.
The Oak board specifies requiring a minimum of 2.5 A for the 5 V input.
The mean well power supply supplied with the Oak board (model RQ 65D) is rated at 5V, 4.0A.
Since the RQ 65D covers the minimum current requirement for the OAK and 1616 Does this mean I can power the PLCADD1616 from the oak board through header H3? OR is this cutting it too close, and should I power the PLCADD1616 with its own 5V power supply through Header H6?

I answered my own question by looking at the OAk schematic examples included with the board :)
looks like the PLCADD1616 uses its own power supply...

As a follow-up to anyone who runs into a similar problem in the future. If you had a PLC program (pretty much any of our ATC PLC programs) that requires a PLCADD1616 (or any other I/O Expansion board) you will get that error message as long as it is not detected. It would not matter if you have it plugged in or not, as long as it can't be seen it will error since it is "required" for that PLC program.

Some system configurations would get occasional errors when powered through the H3 communication cable. Using another supply wired in to the screw terminals H6 is the most reliable method.
