ENA+ and ENA- Pins

I am currently in the process of hooking up my controls for a G0704 milling machine. I am using Kelling 5056D drivers and 570 ounce inch stepper motors.

The schematic I am using is the rev3 version of the Connections to Leadshine DM series stepper drives.

I watched the Marty's video on "Wiring a Leadshine Closed Loop Stepper". The Acorn schematic shows connections to ENA+ and ENA- coming from a 5v power supply (ena+) and a connection from acorn's ENA- pin to ENA- on the driver. Marty did not run connections to ENA+ or ENA-. Are these connections needed or not? If not are there specific applications that require these connections.

This is pretty common, and Marty shows it well. A good number of these drives have the enable terminal available, which makes them compatible with many/most controllers. Since all control systems are not created equally, the drive mfgr makes the default setting on the enable as low or "no connection" or no voltage across the ENA + & - terminals. Connecting voltage to these will stop the drives.

IF you wish to use these, you should reprogram the drive to be active with high signal. Then an enable signal will activate the drive and estop will deactivate

Thanks for the explanation. I went back and looked in the driver instruction manual a little closer and found the following:

"ENA +- pins Enable signal: This signal is used for enabling/disabling the driver. High level (NPN control signal, PNP and Differential control signals are on the contrary, namely Low level for enabling.) for enabling the driver and low level for disabling the driver. Usually left UNCONNECTED (ENABLED)."

Yes, that is standard Leadshine verbiage. In most cases I leave them disconected, since adding the circuit will not increase function. I would use a contactor for the power supply on a Drive ok relay
