Hobby lathe open or closed loop CNC drives

Post by ronster »

I have a Grizzly G0768 lathe and recently purchased a used/unused CNC conversion kit for this lathe. This kit was never actually used, but came with a couple of NEMA 23 open loop stepper drives. I will be purchasing another Centroid Acorn controller for lathe, but my CNC mill is using a closed loop system and I have no experience with an open loop. Can someone shed a bit of insight about what I can expect using a open rather than a closed loop system.

Thanks for any comments.

I would not use them, CL Steppers are running much better.

But nowadays AC 400W servos are almost the same price, more power, more speed but a bit more time to wire them and tune them.

I was thinking a couple of Clearpath servos.
Thanks p.
