Dump persons guide to machine coordinates

Hi, ok I am finding the whole machine coordinates thing a problem. With my cnc mill, I just jog the tool to the zero, zero point of the material then just zero out the dro both for the machine coordinates and the part.
However I can’t figure out how to zero the lathe version of C12 . So far I am at the point of jogging the tool to the leading edge of the material I wish to machine. I set the part z axis at 0.00, I set the x axis at the diameter of the material. But because I don’t know how to zero the machine coordinates ,it all goes wrong if I try to start the job.
Can someone please explain in very simple terms the following.
1. Can I set the machine coordinates to aline with the part coordinates. So if I have set z axis at zero, and x at +10 can I set the the same in machine coordinates and start the job. If so how do I do that?
2. I don’t have home switches at the moment and have set the software so it will not ask for a home position. So if I am correct, I just need to set the part coordinate and then the machine coordinates and all will be well. Am I mistaken.
Please answer in very simple terms, I have watched far too many videos, and they don’t answer these questions.
Thanks
