Windows 10 to 11

Post by RJS100 »

I recently read that Windows 10 will no longer be supported after October. Just curious if most Centroid users are upgrading their machines to Windows 11?

I did mine yesterday exactly because I run the machine on my network so I can transfer CAD/CAM etc between office and workshop PC's so wanted to ensure the virus definitions etc can be kept up to date. Well, at least until Win12 comes along.....

I did a full new clean install though so wiped the whole PC rather than just do an upgrade.

FYI and you probably know this but that doesn't mean Windows 10 wont work anymore if you don't upgrade.

Yes. I am aware of that, which is why I am still not sure if it is worth upgrading at all. I keep this computer disconnected from the internet.

The only reason I am thinking of upgrading is because Centroid could require Windows 11 in the future and I thought I read that Microsoft may change for this upgrade sometime down the line.

If you are eligible for the free upgrade then I'd just do it to save yourself any unwanted headaches in the future. I've done it for a few customers with no issues.

My CNC PCs are too old for WIN11, I can only update with some cheating

But why change a winning system ( stupid phrase for someone Beta testing :D )

I am sure MS will supply security updates for the next 2-4 years even if the official support is done.

True, many older PC's aren't even eligible devices for Win11 so you'd have to check that first before you even consider upgrading. :o

No problem to use WIN11 on a < Gen8 Intel chip if you know how to do.

But do not except the CNC will make a single part better or faster than with WIN10

Security within a local network can be done with WIN10 also, you will not need to allow the CNC to connect to the internet to let your CAM post in the cnc folder.

There will be no more security updates, for Win10 after October unless you PAY starting at $61/year for the first year; going up each year up to 3 additional years.
