Swissi Probe & TT setup

I am helping another Centroid user setup a KP3 touch probe and moveable TT. For starters I want to mirror my setup with his new machine. I have two questions regarding the setup that my memory is fuzzy with:

1. I cannot recall how I determined the height of the TT. See attached where it says touch off at the base of the TT. Can someone jog my memory as to what needs to be done?

2. I used the reference tool for the height method. How do you determine the height of the KP3? Is it measured like all the other tools after completing #1 above and the reference tool height has been established?

You can use M115 (look in the manual for detailed infos) to drive a tool till the TTO trips and then measure the height under the tool with gauge blocks.

Thanks. I will check that out.

I vaguely remember touching the probe off at the base of the TT (and setting z to zero), then slowly lowering the tip of the probe to the top of the TT until the TT input was triggered and getting a height measurement.

You could also use the single-axis probing cycle to get the two measurements.

When I did mine I ground a block of steel to the exact height of the TTO when it was triggered. It is important to get the height when the tto is triggered as depending on the spring strength of either the TTO or the Touch Probe you could be off significantly depending on which triggers first. After I had the ground block finished I used it to set the Touch Probe height as my reference tool. I am sure you already am aware of this but I thought I would throw this out there for others.

To have an precise measurment it must be done at the slow probing speed. Easy with M115

Thanks for the thoughts. I did not think a probing cycle would work because it is triggered by the probe, which has a much stiffer spring than the TT. That is why I think I did the process I mentioned above:

If you auto measure tools, this is done with slow probing speed.

That means the TTO will trigger and record position at the point with all delays the Z axis stops.

If you do this slower with small increments this will be a slightly different position.

To get best results, TTO, Probing and homing must be done always at the same speed and calibrated at this speed.

That make sense to perform all of these functions at the same speed. I will check this out further. Thanks for your insights... Richard

M115 /Z P -6 F5 ; Move Z minus at 5 ipm until probe trips assuming Probe Trip is on Input 6 and TTO on the same input

Easy to use in MDI
