Probe Arm for lathe

Since the automatic tool touch off works in all 4 directions, regardless if the TTO is in the spindle or off center, I designed a quick connect arm for the TTO.

This type of mounting the TTO will also allow to probe in +Z direction for left tooling, and if the workpiece is not too big you can probe with the workpiece in the chuck.

The Probe Arm is ready.

Now I have to make a square tip for the Probe.

Parts are milled with blue tape/CA mounting, threads are milled.

A big advantage of a probe arm is that you can measure tools with the workpiece clamped, or with a collet chuck, no need to change the collet for measuring.

I also was running out of X travel for big boring bars, now the probe can be mounted with X offset.

So now I got my solid carbide square for the TTO and just made the construction to mount it on the probe...

The square is a 3 buck replacement part for turning tool holders

If this works, easy peasy to measure lathe tools in all four (six) directions with high precision ;)

This unacceptable useless thing for mill only owners is ready, but there is a solution :

Make a DIY CNC lathe, a mill is very handy for this purpose

Now easy peasy to measure cut off blades on the right side, and no need to calculate cut off thickness to the part...

That is really a great addition to your lathe. I am always amazed at how your brain works.

No beer with CNC, but wine with CAM :D :D
