Which encoder are you referring to? The one on the motor or the in the pic's?

A quick search on google appears that your WJ200 will run a PM motor.

Re: What motor to use for lathe spindle?
Post pictures of the motor please, well tell you what you have.
GS3 is a sensorless vector VFD. It needs no feedback.
There is no need for the encoder on the spindle motor as long as you have a line driver/quadrature encoder belted to the spindle at 1:1. Automation Direct sells these as well fairly reasonably. Do not buy a light duty encoder and put a pulley directly on it, it will fail. They are designed to be driven by a bearing supported shaft. The medium/heavy duty encoders have heavy bearings in them and can take the load of a pulley directly mounted to them.

Re: What motor to use for lathe spindle?
I watched your video all the way through. First glance, you have step and direction axis drives that should be able to be driven by Acorn.TRM wrote: ↑Fri Nov 16, 2018 11:18 pm Here is a video of the lathe.

The spindle motor appears to be a traditional A.C. drive spindle motor with feedback.
I would try hard to find the manual for the spindle drive and use it.
Can figure out which wires are the analog control input pair of wires? The +/- 0 to 10vdc pair. If so, take note of their position disconnect them, insert a pair of wires, power up the drive and using a 1.5vdc battery, connect it to the pair of wires and see if the motor spins and runs. Then reverse polarity of the battery and see if it runs in the opposite direction.
Try this first.
The extra axis drive in the cabinet, do its wires go to where a turret might have been? A walk around of tbe machune would have been nice to see everything. Axis motor location, spindle encoder location(does it have one?) Overall view of the machine.
Also, what is the history of the machine? What is wrong with the Siemens controller?

Re: What motor to use for lathe spindle?
Marty, Look at the 3.40 mark in the video and I show and talk about the external mount encoder that is belted 1:1 to the spindle.
It was not wired in. The spindle motor also has an encoder and that is the one being used. It plugs into the CTB spindle motor driver and the driver
sends encoder feedback to the Siemens controller. I would rather use the belted external encoder encase I have to service it in the future.
I fully understand that the encoder can not support the side loading that will come from a belt. I understand that the shaft the pulley is mounted to
must be supported by a bearing system and the encoder is to see shaft rotation only. I posed pic's of the external mount encoder with the cover on and off. Do you think it will work with Acorn?
The Siemens controller will not reference due to the missing tool turret. Changes to the PLC will need to be made to get the controller to work with out the tool turret. I can not buy service help at any price to get it going. If it was a Haas, Fadal Mazak etc I could pay a service guy to come out and fix the issue pay the man and be on my way. I don't want a controller that I can't service myself or pay for service.
Since I know I can keep the spindle motor and use my Hitachi VFD to drive it I'm turning my attention to the encoder I have. Is it the type I can use yes or no?
The machine was seized due to a tenet not paying his lease. It was a what you see is what you get deal. The machine is a 2014 model.
Based in the condition of the keys on the controller I don't think it got much use.

Re: What motor to use for lathe spindle?
I think the encoder on the spindle will work from what I can see in the picture. It should have 8 wires in order to wire to the DB-9 connector on the acorn board. Pin 1 is not used on the DB-9.I'm turning my attention to the encoder I have. Is it the type I can use yes or no?
You should have a wire for 5vdc, a wire for 5vdc common or it may say "0v", then A+,B+, Z+A-B-and Z-. If you have those wire it should be an RS432/quadrature encoder and it should work. (you will also need to ground the shield wire to the DB-9 case) All the issues I've had with encoders had to do with the wiring not being twisted pair and shielded so I had noise issues) If you don't know the line count it is easy to figure out once you get it working.
The encoder on the spindle motor is a TTL encoder and it will not work and it is not 1:1 with the spindle, so no go there.
Wiring diagram for the DB-9 is on every drawing from Centorid!

Re: What motor to use for lathe spindle?
Thanks. I'm going to see if Centroid will have a black Friday/ cyber Monday sale before I buy My Acorn and supporting parts.

I think the product is so well priced you don't need to wait! But I only own two of them so far, both with pro licenses.

It is a great deal without a doubt.
I want to say thanks to you guys for helping to this point. I have a ways to go yet but it makes be feel good to get good help.
