A pulley and belt are a better choice. I wanted to start with the gear as that can be a simple bolt on to the machine that doesn't require any disassembly. I'll be testing it out this evening. I'll let you know how it goes.
Please get a video of this Franco!

Here is the first video:

Seems to be working OK so far. We'll see how well it holds up.

Great video(s) Franco, thanks so much for taking the time to produce & post them. You make it so easy to understand!
ps: Is it possible with Acorn to sync the Z-axis to the spindle with it (the spindle) turned back & forth by hand? To me, that is THE most graphic portrayal of encoder feedback.

That would be awesome. Imagine a MDI with the spindle on and zero speed would work?
Franco doesn't mess around does he?

(Insert dope-slap smilie here)I should've thought of that! Then I could've been the first non LinuxCNC DIY-guy to post a video of that! Oh wait, I don't have a decent video camera yet.
...and no, Franco don't play around! (Like me

Cool...thanks for posting that. If anyone does the same, you’ll have to swap wires on the encoder or the rotation will be backwards due to the use of gears.

Good point.
You can also change the sign (positive or negative) for the number of encoder pulses in the CNC wizard.
Encoders are cool...

Cool, I didn’t know that. I guess I can rewire my encoder the “proper” way and fix it in the Wizard.

Hey Guys - I'm getting closer to having that Mini-Lathe encoder mounting kit ready.
