So I was set up on AI2. I switched the control wire over to AI1 and I could not get the rpms over 200 using the default p5.12-5.15 settings. I thought we needed it at a 0-10v input since that's what acorn puts out. I swapped it back over to AI2 and played around with p5.19 and p5.20 and it only seemed to mess with the max rpm setting. The m3 s640 would go down when I changed the values but so did the max rpm. Maybe I'm changing the wrong thing?!?

Here are my notes for the GT series drive.
Personally, I only use the drives from Automationdirect.com. GS3 series drives specifically. They work well.
PLEASE post a fresh report.

Please see attached file. I used your sheet to setup my vfd a few months ago. I looked at my j16 jumper. One side of the jumper is connected to the triangle shape and the jumpered to the one right beside it. Is this correct? Ignore any recent errors in the log for today. I was having to reset the controller alot changing the parameters.

If you did your best to follow the VFD setup viewtopic.php?f=63&t=1650
And you tried to use the linear tracking that Tom posted, I am not sure what else to suggest.

I just chose to spend a little more money and buy a known supported drive and stick with it for some of these reasons Automationdirect know their drives and their support is quite good. For me anymore, The time and frustration is not worth saving a few bucks. Buy once cry once.

If you plan on rigid tapping then it is more important for the lower RPM range to be more accurate.
I'm sorry I don't have anything better for you. Many have used and live with the HY Drives.

Last night I tuned the 640 rpms like Dave c suggested in the first link you posted. I set the vfd output hz to 190 for max speed. I had to change the max speed in the wizard to 34000 rpms to get a m3 s640 to work. I can manually drive the spindle to 6200 rpms using the spindle override. But when I go to actually run a cnc program made from fusion 360 the rpm is about half or so of what I programed. Could this be because I have different sized pulleys on my motor and spindle?

So this mornng I tried to tap some wax. 9 holes. Drill and tap no problem. Everything worked in wax. Then I moved to plastic. The tap worked fine on the first hole then once it pulled out of the hole the spindle stopped very quickly to change directions and then i got a an error code 438 slave position error. Any suggestions on these new findings?

When your spindle is turning in the proper direction, do you have a minus sign in front of the RPM on your CNC12 display?
If so, go in and add a -sign in front of the encoder value. For example if it was 8000 previously, try -8000

No its spinning the right way. So new developments. I slowed down the tapping speed to around 540 rpms and it worked. Multiple holes with no faults tapped in plastic. I may get brave and try some aluminium.
But my real issue is now my max speed is WAY off when I run a program.

So after a little bit more messing around I figured out a workaround that seems to work for my situation. I changed my vfd settings back to what I had them with the max hz at 90. This gives me a speed of 6300 rpms approximately. Then all I had to do was do just a few trial runs in fusion 360 with the spindle rpm in the actual program. So in fusion 360 my default tapping rpms is set at 400 rpms. When I run that program in centroid the 400rpms now becomes around 640 rpms and it seems to work. I tapped holes in .5" thick aluminum with a regular er collet and whatever tap i had. I tried 1/4-20 and a 3/8-16 with zero issues. Here's the video of the 1/4-20s

Whats the best way to rewire a factory installed decoder. My machine has an encoder that has a short pigtail on the wire end. There is a high dollar connector that connects the pigtail to the factory encoder cable. I soldered the db9 connector on the other end to connect to acorn. The wire is hard and not flexible in a short section. Ive been getting some spinde faults since I hooked up rigid tapping and hooked the encoder up. Its been pretty consistent today. I unhooked the encoder and ran a long program with no errors so I'm pretty sure its the cable. When I did the connector end I soldered the drain wire to the 9 pin connector. Any suggestions?

Drain wire should be connected at both ends. On the DE9 end it should be soldered to the shell, and metal or metallized back-shells are best. For cable, I prefer a polyurethane jacketed CAT6 ethernet cable will individually shielded twisted pairs. Three brands I have used in the past with good success are Igus Chainflex CF898.045, Lapp Kabel 2170489, and Leoni Pur Cat7 Plus 20963. All are industrial twist and flex rated.
