I called ClearPath today and they have a motor that will work. A encoder will be required

Your in the right place to get help. There are lots of people here who know how to hook up anything you might need.

The centroid crew is awesome as well and they can give you good advice. (they really are very good)

The good news is that Centroid post all the wiring diagrams you will need to hook up clearpath servos as well as many other types of steppers or servos. If you have not dowloaded the drawings, go to the Centroid web page, find the Acorn stuff and look for the drawings.

The drawings also come with the Acorn software download!

If it were me, I'd keep the spindle servo that came with the lathe as it is already mounted to the machine. Unless of course it happens to have some shortcomings that might make it less desirable.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, that is how we all learn. In fact helping others get their machines up and running is how we gain additional experiance.

Edit: I looked at the clearpath servo you linked to above. That is a hoss of a motor and should get the job done.

I agree with the above. I use a lot of clear path stuff at my business. It’s great stuff. But hooking it up is not one iota easier than the existing drive you have in the machine currently. I might even be a bit trickier because the clear path will need another power supply and the analog converter board put in. The guys around here will help you get set up if you choose to keep the current stuff. The money spent on the motor could be better spent, IMO, on tooling or other equipment you’ll want or need down the road.

I'm going to take the advice given and see if I can with the help of you guys get the original motor and drive to work with Acorn.
I'm going to order the Acorn board and the pre configured Nuc. for starters and start there. Do you guys think we can get the Siemens axes motor drives

From what I saw in the manual there is no reason they would not work! The Siemens axes motor drives takes step and direction and that is what Acorn wants.

Someone will have to help figure out if the step and direction is a 5vdc or 24vdc signal on the Siemens and explain how to wire each one. Siemens is known to be "good stuff" so if the servos and drives are operable, I'd at least try to use them and save the money for something else down the line.

I'll take a better look at the manual and see if I can figure out what voltage is needed for the step and direction signals.

Ok, I'm back. It looks like the drives take 24vdc input signals. (Page 16 shows how to wire them) But I also see on page 19 that the X5 is shown using resistors and says 5vdc. (Now we just past my ability to help so can someone explain why the two different descriptions?)

I see the drives all take 3 phase power, so do you have 3 phase power available?

You guys have convinced me to get this thing going with the drivers and motors that is on the machine. I will do my very best to make this happen!

Look on page 36.
It looks like to me to control motor speed with Acorn's output 0-10V the wires need to be connected to F1 and FC. 0~10V/4~20mA
But the drive is wired FV and FC -10~10V
Do you guys think the drive will take 0-10V input on F1 and FC ?

I have a 5v power supply. I guess I could take a trim pot using my 5v power supply and see if the motor would run up to half its rated RPM right?
