Yes, that is the wrong type of encoder. You need one with differential output signals (two wires per channel, not just one wire per channel).

That is why you could not find anything to connect to pins 3, 4 and 5 of the DE9 connector. Pins 3, 4 and 5 receive the complementary signals: /Z, /A and /B (also called Z-not, A-not and B-not, or other variations of the same idea).

I would guess that you also had to defeat the "412 ... encoder differential error" alarm somehow, unless that is always defeated for Acorn controls.
