Using Lightburn and rotary

Post by kman1967 »

I have been using Lightburn to generate G Code for my AcornSix. It works pretty well but I wanted to start using my rotating axis as well. Unfortunately Lightburn uses odd settings which don't translate well to the G code in my Acorn. I am using a B axis and the G code uses degrees. Lightburm outputs in mm/revolution.
Wondered if anyone has experience setting this up on their Acorn.

I haven't looked into it, but will need to in the future. When I get a chance, i'll take a look at LB. I wonder if there might be a setting for rotary output. Could also try asking on the LB support forum.

That is the way Lightburn works...

For rotary g-code with 4th axis you have to use a 4 axis CAM like fusion, or convert a 3 axis g-code with g-code ripper for 4 axis

I'd be interested in a solution for Lightburn too.
I've been able to get this to work using Vectric Aspire. The advantage with Aspire is that you control the post processor. I'd prefer to use Lightburn, but there are parts you can't get control over. The PP I use works for laser on the rotary, but it ain't perfect. I'd hoped the "project to model" function would work as well as it does for regular engraving but found there is some character shrinkage that I had to fiddle with.
Attached is a picture of a laser engraving on large rolling pin I did for a local market. I've also attached the accompanying GCode for you to look at.

Sword: I have gone through all the settings and the forums as well. This appears to a common gripe for people using LB. Some people have come up with crazy work arounds for their specific machines but I am not sure how they would work with Centroid.
CNCIAN: I have gone trough all the documentation. There is some documentation that talks about setting the steps per revolution in LB but it actually isn't in the software at all. This has come up in forums as well.
GROSSMSJ: I have Vetric as well and may have to use that. I also use Autodesk Inventor but I have not setup a fourth axis in that yet. I have read that it seems very easy to use in Fusion so I may check that out as well. I too would prefer to use LB for the laser.

GROSSMSJ: Did you modify the PP for Vetric to work with the Acorn?

Yes. PM me if you want a copy of the PP.

Just a few clicks to wrap a flat Lightburn G-Code around a rotary with GCodeRipper...

GROSSMSJ: I was able to modify my PP and all it works, thank you for your offer.

Only problem I have now is the linear moves don't burn as well as the curves as they seem to move faster. My rotary is synced for feed but can't seem to get it to work
