possible new Centroid Project

Post by Ryan Patterson »

I have acquired a used machine that has a bad Syntec controller. I am weighing my options. The Syntec controller is older and obsolete. The options I am considering is an updated Syntec, Fanuc or to save some money Centroid.

The servo Drives are Delta ASDA-M series. This drive is not listed as a supported drive on the Centroid website. so this may rule out the option of using Centroid as a controller. Has anyone used this drive?

Will those drives accept either discrete-wired pulse-train position-mode commands (e.g. quadrature A-B phases, or step/direction); or discrete-wired analog velocity-mode commands?

Or do they only work with a data bus interface?

If they can accept discrete-wired position-mode or velocity-mode control, then you could probably run them with an Oak or Acorn.

Looks like it can. The Encoder Resolution is 20-bit (1,280,000 p/rev). Looks like the Oak is the controller for these drives. The Oak lists the Delta ASDA-A2. The ASDA-M should work the same as the A2.

I took a look at the drive's manual and yes, it will work with Oak.

However, you cannot directly use our cable PN: 13131 / drawing number S14533 since the CN1 header lacks DO4 and DO5. You would have to modify the cable to use DO1, DO2, or DO3 for those functions and reassign the drive outputs in the parameters. Or use the flying lead cable PN: 13133 / drawing number S14531, put on the CN1 connector yourself, and reassign the drive outputs in the parameters.

I have used the ASDA-M before. It is just step-dir so it can be used by an Centroid oak for example.
I like the newer interface software of the Delta 3 series more (b3/A3). But if your system works and is already tuned, just keep it as is.
