Bridgeport Series I V2XT Retrofit - Limits not working

Post by CarrowMac »

Hello Folks - Newbie here. I am upgrading a Bridgeport Series I V2XT with DX-32 control to the Centroid Allin1DC with MPU12 and I am having difficulty wiring the limit switches. There are 4 wires coming in for both the x and y axis (red, black, green/yellow, and white). According to the original Bridgeport wiring diagram (included in the google photo drive) the red and black wires are the limit circuit and the green/yellow and white are the home circuit. When tested with a multimeter, the limit circuit is NC and the home circuit it NO.

Currently, the closed limit wires are wired to IN1, IN3, and IN5 and those show green on the I/O screen. The home wires are wired to IN2, IN4, and IN6 and show red on the I/O screen (I assume because the circuit is open?). When powered on like this, I get a 411 "axis full power without motion" error.
When I defeat IN2, IN4, and IN6, I am able to jog a fractional increment before getting an error. I can toggle the e-stop to clear the error, but the same thing happens. Also - when the the machine moves, it moves in the same direction no matter if I press the + or - button.

Questions...
How can I connect the home limits to the Allin1DC to work without giving an error?
Why is the machine only moving in one direction?
Do you see any other issues in my wiring that I need to address? (My current wiring diagram is included in the google drive)

The limits need to be normally closed and connected to ALLIN1DC or defeated on ALLIN1DC. Motion will be stopped at the hardware level, so software settings will not get around the hardware settings. It seems like you know this already. If the home switches are NO, it would be best to replace them rather than try workarounds.

The direction of your motor and encoder don't match. The quickest solution is to swap the red and black motor wires at the ALLIN1DC.

the stock limit switches that i have encountered on bridgeports often have two terminals for each switch one is NC and the other is NO.
i simply remove the wires from the NO side and use the NC side of the switch.

post photos of the switches your machines has. with shots of the terminal block connectors on switch etc..

Thanks guys -

For the movement issue - I defeated the home limit switches at IN2, IN4, and IN6 just to see if I can get the machine running and will address changing the circuits to NC later. I have tried swapping the red and black power wires at each Axis 1, 2, and 3 as suggested. Upon powering on, I have all green lights at IN1-6 on the I/O screen and home will set. However, when I attempt to jog there is no movement and an immediate "411 _ axis full power without motion" error appears. I also tried putting the red and black wire back as they were originally and swapping the VM+ and VM- wires but have the same issue.

What should I try now?
Should I swap the red and black motor wires back to the way they were?

fpwom = cnc12 commanding motor to move and doesn't see any movement from the encoder.

so

could be the motor drive has no motor power.

could be no encoder feedback

could be axis stuck, could be brake motor brake is on....

see the fpwom common causes in the manual for more guidance.

Chances are if you swaped the motor power leads, you will need to swap the A and B channels of the encoder as well to keep the correct encoder direction.
Cheers,

Tom

This is a very bad idea. Put the VM+ and VM- wires back where they belong, before you damage something.
VM+ (from the positive terminal of the rectifier and capacitor) goes to the lower terminal (closer to the motor connections).
VM- (from the negative terminal of the rectifier and capacitor) goes to the upper terminal (closer to the logic power plug).

If you get no motion (rather than a runaway) when it says "411 ... full power without motion", then the drive is unable to move the motor.

An encoder polarity mismatch would cause a runaway (more like what you described in your first post), and typically "410 ... position error".

Check your DC voltage between VM+ and VM- at the Allin1DC.
Verify that the motor shafts are free to turn.
Check continuity and resistance between your red and black motor leads, disconnected from the Allin1DC (i.e. through the motor power cable and through the motor).
