Does anyone know IF this exists? 3C collet with set screws
Im setting up probes for both my Sherline mill and Chucker lathe. For the mill I will use a fixed tool holder so I got that covered. Same probe that Uwe used on his PM lathe.
For the lathe, most of the time I will be using a 3C collet. Which if you are not familiar is a really small R8 style collet. So fixing a probe into a tapered collet will not be repeatable. SO Im wondering IF anyone knows if there is a 3C collet that has set screws OR a way to tighten the tool into the holder, so in this case the shaft of the probe. THEN fix the collet into the machine?
I will be using the probe as a tool setter.
The other option is that I already have a 3 jaw chuck that is permanently mounted to a 3C collet, BUT i dont want to dedicate this chuck for the probe.
Any input would be great.

You have a lathe, so simply turn some steel to replicate a 3C collet with a bore for the probe in it...

Good option but I need to 1st learn the lathe in order to make parts, not there yet. Have mill experience but no CNC lathe chops yet. And honestly Im think the di stock required for the part might be a big for this little machine but you can tell me what you think? I just dont know how much stick ou on the stock I can get with 3 jaw chuck on this machine. Id rather just buy something and be done for now. 10 months setting machines and working a full time job up and I have not made my 1st real part.

I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.

Even better, get a pre-machined one:

Except those were R8 shank and not 3C shanks that the OP needs.Muzzer wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 12:30 pm Even better, get a pre-machined one:

Ah. Yes, well spotted. That reduces the options and puts the price up!

Re: Does anyone know IF this exists? 3C collet with set screws
I would love to find one of those R8 style in a 3C but have not seen anything yet. The Hardinge plug collet is a good option but I'm honestly not confident I can machine the hole perfectly, yet. need to get my Lathe chops down before I spend 73 bucks, screw it up and have to start over.Muzzer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 29, 2022 8:54 am Ah. Re: Does anyone know IF this exists? 3C collet with set screws
Another idea I was just thinking about is to just mount a shaft collar on the probes shaft as a stop. Then when I tighten down the collet I just dont tighten to much as not to draw the collet into the spindle to much. I need to experiment with that.
How repeatable do you guys think that will be? Not a huge amount of experience with tapered tool holders so not sure.
