EMCO PC Turn 120 Retrofit

Post by sawwas77 »

Hey all, I have a PC Turn 120 and to be honest a little stuck with the OEM AC spindle motor - it has a Force Vent fan on the back and I'm keen to see if anyone else has converted a machine with this motor or how to go about it?

To be honest spindle motors are my nemesis, thought this one would be quite straight forward being an Emco with an AC motor rather than DC.

I'd like to use this motor as its the original if it can be connected

I have three sets of cables in the main motor terminal box

Cable 1 - L1, L2 & L3 Main motor in delta mode I believe

Cable 2 - 11 & 12 violet wires into the motor casing - PTC sensor I think?

Cable 3 - 6 core going to the force vent fan
2U1(black), 2V1(blue) & 2W1(brown) connected to terminal block labelled L1, L2 & L3
2U2(green), 2V2(white) & 2W2(yellow) connected to a terminal block with no label

Pictures below of the connections & motor plate detail

Perhaps the fan motor is able to be wired either star or delta, and all six wires are broken out so it can be configured at the terminals (or even changed at run-time via contactors).

If you disconnect any other devices from the terminals, then check continuity among the six, do you find that each one of the U1/V1/W1 wires connect to, and only to, one of the U2/V2/W2 wires? Or do you find continuity within a set (e.g. U1 to V1, V1 to W1, U to W1)?

Just checked the continuity and they are connected U1/U2, V1/V2 & W1/W2

Machine as purchased recently, just stripped it and cleaned it over the last few days ready to start the build - it doesn't look like its seen much work as it came from a tech centre. I've finished up the new aluminium motor mounts for the closed loop steppers & modified the pulleys, they are Nema 34 and maybe slightly over kill but I had them left over from another build so will make use of them on my first Acorn project

I have another (but older) 120 machine arriving in a few days, that one has to get in line for a new system while I get this one together. Will probably run this one on clearpath servo's - I'm halfway through a WEDM build that uses them for wire guide rollers/tension at the moment and really like them so may give them a whirl.

Hello sawwas77. I have that same motor. Did you figure out your connections? The person I purchased mine from had been into and ripped a bunch of stuff out trying to get it up and running with the original controller. Can you share your wiring incites with me so I can learn from you?

Hi BGracia - I didn't use the original motor in the end, I decided to go up to a TEC 3Kw version instead and coupled with a 4Kw Yaskawa V1000.

Finished the retrofit as per enclosed pictures.

I'm onto my second machine now but using the same TEC 3Kw motor again

Cheers

Scott

here is the original wiring diagram that was inside the motor cover from factory, maybe of some help.
