Drive Fault

Post by Dbur525 »

hi All
I have a G0704 mill running Dmm 750 watt servos for XYZ and a Dmm 1.0 servo as a spindle motor.
my controller is 220 volts running acorn 4.18

I have limit switches for all axis. My procedure when i power up the controller it to then open cnc12, press reset which pulls in the relay, you can here it click, then i press cycle start to send the machine home to hit the limit switches and set machine Zero.

My controller and machine has been working perfectly the last 4 months or so.
today I tried to drill a hole in aluminum with a .812 diameter drill, which i never done before. I drilled 20 holes .400 deep, everything good. then as the drill started to drill hole #21 , i got a spindle fault and the machine just stopped running.

I powered down cnc12 as well as the controller box and rebooted everything. all the leds on the drives were lit upon the restart.

I again followed my standard start up procedure, I pressed reset on cnc12 screen the relay kicked in, but when i pressed cycle start to send machine home, there was no motor movement, then within a few seconds the relay dropped out and the onscreen message showed a drive fault.
i opened controller and the Z axis drive was flashing in alarm state.

I also noted that, at wire connector group H1 IN3 terminal led lite was flashing
does anybody have any suggestions?

im thinking of removing the Z axis motor and replacing it with a spare one that i have just to try and narrow down my issue's

Check ALL control fuses, you may have blown one....check your voltages at the drive. Should be 230VAC
Spindle drive standard VFD? OR is it a DYN4 and AC Servo for spindle?
Sounds to me like your Spindle drive faulted and the Z axis tried to push a bit and you blew a fuse....

Hi Marty
I just checked all the fuses, they are all good.

Yes Im running the spindle using DYN4 driver with DMM AC servo 1.0 in fact all my drives are DYN4

The Z axis drive has power i have 120 volts to LI and 120 volts to L2

Note: when i open cnc12 press reset that pulls in relay but when i press cycle start to initiate the homing sequence, the Z axis is suppose to home first, and i noticed that Z motor does not move, but the X axis motor rotates ever so slightly, then the Z axis drive faults, very strange?

DO you have 240v at the drive and logic supply terminals of all four Dyn4 drives?
Sounds to me like you pushed the Z drive/spindle drive too hard.

Hi Marty
yes I think you are right about pushing machine to hard, im kickin myself right now.
I should of circle milled the holes.

My questions are could i have damaged the acorn board? heartbeat is good all led lites are lit

Could I have damaged the drive?
or the servo motor?

those 750 watt motors i have trouble beleaving, i could even hurt them with this small mill,
I sent DMM an email,
yes i have 220 volts all drives

750Watts is only 1hp.

Shut down and restart everything.
Cycle the Physical Estop button to close the Estop relay and send power to the drives.
CHECK VOLTAGE on the bottom of the estop contactor, across the red wires. 240VAC?

DO NOT HOME the machine

Jog X in each direction
Jog Y in each direction.
OK or no? (Watch the drive LEDs)
Manually start and stop the spindle using VCP spindle control
Spindle run ok?
Now, jog the Z axis in the - direction. Move ok?
Jog Z axis in the positive direction. (Watch the LED's on the DYN4 Drives)

I am concerned you do not have the motor safety grounds landed on the drives.....

Manually turn the Z axis ballscrew. Can you turn it easily or is it stuck?

hi Marty
Ok, i powered down everything, restarted the controller, opened up cnc12, pressed the reset button.

I checked across the estop contactor red wires 220 volts was there.

then using the cnc12 screen buttons i jogged X and Y they moved perfectly!
next i jogged Z down in minus direction and it moved okay, how ever when i attempted to jog Z up in the positive direction , i got the drive fault and Z drive led was flashing in alarm state

yes I can turn Z axis ball screw by hand
