Anybody having issues with Windows 10 filling the HDD
Hi all
Was just wondering how you manage space on your machines. I have a machine in which is a 250GB SSD. Windows 10 has decided to fill that space with goodness knows what and is demanding to delete a whole bunch of things. Before I reinstall the machine with a 1TB SSD has anyone experienced the same issues?
BTW, Windows 10 updates are turned off and the the only thing I installed is CNC12, that is aside from the few gcode files I have added - nowhere near 250GB
Cheers
Bruce

If you upgraded Windows (that includes automatic updates of feature releases), then there are complete backup copies of previous windows installs on your disk.
Cheers,

HI Tom
New install on a new machine. I cannot find anything that will stop Windoze 10 filling it back up again. I recently had the same problem with my machine inside, I installed a 1TB drive in that too. At the moment I have 550GB free

Being a Windows 10 newbie ( came from Linux & Mac) I wouldn't have a clue to be honest. Will find that setting and see what it is set to....

If you have it set up to create periodic restore points, this could gradually gobble up disk space. You can set the maximum space available for use to create restore points. Type "create a restore point" into the search bar (magnifying glass at bottom left of desktop) and select "configure" from the popup box. Then make sure it's set it to something sensible like a few 10s of GB max.
You can also use something like CCleaner to empty out the recycle bin, remove old downloads, internet cache, remove unused programs etc. https://www.ccleaner.com/download You need the free version which they try to make less than easy to select. I've used this for years - it's safe and respectable.

Re: Anybody having issues with Windows 10 filling the HDD
Something has certainly gone awry with your machine. My CNC PC has a 120GB SSD installed and I have only used 25.8GB for win10 and all my cnc programs. Win10 only needs 32BG of space for an install and then it removes many of the temp files from the install when it's done.

Re: Anybody having issues with Windows 10 filling the HDD
Try running Disk Cleanup which is a native Win10 app (type "disk cleanup" into the search bar) and review space taken by each of the 10 or so items. Carefully tick each of the items you want to remove. My guess in addition to above posts is that you have a lot of space taken up temp files etc that can be safely cleaned up.

Re: Anybody having issues with Windows 10 filling the HDD
Strangely enough Disk Cleanup only got me back less than a GB, will finish the task at hand and then reinstall Windows killing off Windows Update permanently via REGEDIT or Group Policy Editor in the process. Today was the first time I had used the machine since starting this thread.

Have you gone in and used file manager to try and find what directory/file is the largest file causing you the issues?Racedirector wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 9:58 am Strangely enough Disk Cleanup only got me back less than a GB, will finish the task at hand and then reinstall Windows killing off Windows Update permanently via REGEDIT or Group Policy Editor in the process.
