Re: hurco hawk 5 retrofit
Well after trying all I know I to try, I’m thinking the VFD is going to have to come out of the control cabinet. Really wanted to keep everything all contained in one cabinet but I just can’t seem to fix the noise issue.

Are you certain the VFD is the cause of your noise? I assume you tested with the VFD turned off?jtroedel8487 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 11:36 am Well after trying all I know I to try, I’m thinking the VFD is going to have to come out of the control cabinet. I see its its an import. Is it a GENUINE Huan Yang? I've not had any noise problems with them really.
Did you connect the VFD to the motor with shielded VFD cable?

Yes, it’s a genuine huan Yang. When the vfd is off the issue go away. I’m using shielded vfd cable and grounded the drain at one end like you said. I’m just going to mount the vfd elsewhere and move on. Ready to have my machine running again!

For the VFD only, and as a test ground both the braided shield of the VFD cable and the ground AT the VFD and AT the motorjtroedel8487 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 3:45 pm Yes, it’s a genuine huan Yang. VFD Cable has a fully braided shield around the conductors, not a mylar film and drain wire. Is that what you have?

Re: hurco hawk 5 retrofit
The cable has the braided shield and a drain wire. Bought it from automation direct. 4 conductor 14 gauge. I think the problem is the cable runs down the wire way next to the acorn drive. I pulled the vfd and I’m going to mount it either on the wal behind the machine or on the back side of the cabinet. This should keep the cable well away from any communication lines.

That's the right cable.jtroedel8487 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 5:02 pm The cable has the braided shield and a drain wire. Bought it from automation direct. 4 conductor 14 gauge. I run the VFD cable out of the VFD and straight to the spindle motor. For example out of the VFD up through a cable strain relief in the cabinet and straight up to the motor.
DO try and ground the SHIELD (pick it back and then twist it together) and ground it with the VFD and Motor Earthground. This is what Belden recommends and what I do. Its worth a shot.
I have mounted the VFD in its own small ventilated cabinet on the side of the machine when space is an issue...

Re: hurco hawk 5 retrofit
Do you have a EMI filter before the VFD? I don't see one or maybe you don't need one withthat VFD. My Teco requires one before at the very least.jtroedel8487 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 11:36 am Well after trying all I know I to try, I’m thinking the VFD is going to have to come out of the control cabinet. Re: hurco hawk 5 retrofit
I'm doing a retrofit on a similar machine, Robotool CVM-1. I got it in 2012 and just now getting to finishing the project. I'm starting over as I started with a CNC4PC Mach4 system and tore it out yesterday and building the Acorn system.
I see also that they recommend Snubbers on all relays.
I had EMI issues caused by spindle. Teco said to put a 3ph EMI on motor side which I did. Worked sort of up to 40 HZ. I then used a shielded cable and no 3ph filter and that worked. My Bad and it cost me dearly. I figured the factory cabling was sufficient but wasn't.
I also saw guys putting toroid filters over the individual wires and over the cable as well. I got a bunch but have yet to need them.
At this point I have no EMI issues but all my transformers and relays, besides the ones on Acorn, are mounted in separate enclosures. I was going to mount them all in the large enclosure today to clean things up but wonder if it just isn't better keeping them all separate? Much less work for sure.

Re: hurco hawk 5 retrofit
Finally got around to working on the machine again, it’s boating season
Got the control/computer mounted. Ended up picking up a swivel tv mount and modifying the mount and original computer stand.

Still having an issue with my touch working properly. The software freezes but when using a mouse no issue at all. May be hardware or noise.
I have ran a few parts on the machine and have ran into the same issue others are having with the dmm drives and acorn. The machine is losing steps. I modified the dmm cables provided by dmm by removing the resistors and soldering in jumper wires, than running the brown wire directly to 5 volts coming from the acorn power supply. I left the screw terminals hooked up for step and direction and still lose steps. I went a head and ordered a db25 breakout connector to run step and direction to the acorn db25 port. Hoping this resolved the issue!
After running the the brown wire to 5 volts I have noticed that my enable LED’s turn red instead of green when enabling the servo motors. It doesn’t appear to be affecting the operation of the machine but am curious as to how this would cause This

Re: hurco hawk 5 retrofit
Keep us posted. I would like to know how things go with your feeding 5VDC to the drives and using the Acorn headers vs. using the DB25
The Enables you probably didn't notice before when they turn on and off.
On power up, they do not change state until you jog an axis, home the machine, enter MDI.
They also change state during a fault or Estop.
Make sure all your PC drivers are up to date.
Nice mount, I use the same one but I sandwich a sheetmetal keyboard tray I make for my machines.
See it in my recent Clausing Kondia retrofit album:
