Acorn Hitachi WJ200 VFD setup

Post by AshG »

this is my first post here on the Acorn forums. i have been quietly reading and absorbing information from you guys for quite a long time without posting or contributing. well today is the day :D

I saw a cool video on the forum demonstrating the differences between sensorless vector and ct. because of said video i decided to go with the the Hitachi wj200 2.2kw single to 3ph VFD, so i can control my spindle speed with acorn rather than swapping belts.

I looked at the cheap Chinese VFD's and decided it wasn't for me. I didn't want the trouble of adding circuits for breaking resistors etc. Also my place has solar on the roof and if i pump loads of noise onto the line my solar inverters will get upset and shut off until i shut down the vfd and stop the spindle. also i dont want to fry my solar inverters as they are far more expensive than a nice VFD.

I had a search on the forums for a specific setup guide for the acorn and WJ200 and drew a blank.

I haven't hooked the wj200 up yet I'm still building the control box for the machine and i cant decide if i should put the vfd in the control box with the drives and acorn or put it outside to avoid potential noise issues. i guess thats another topic for another day :D

looking at the acorn drawings it looks like i need to go with the generic vfd drawing S14883 for acorn rev3 and use the following config.

I'm still figuring this out so i may be wrong, but below is my progress/thoughts so far. Let me know if any of you have specific experience with this setup and see a mistake.

Acorn Header H8 Analogue Spindle speed control to VFD TM3 (Lower long terminal strip)
H8 AN OUT (10v out) to TM3 pin O on wj200
H8 AN GND (10v Cnd to TM3 pin L on wj200

VFD Program Settings for analogue 0-10v speed control. A001 = 01 A005 = 00 AT = off

Spindle reset & direction control using relay board Acorn Header H5 to VFD Header TM2 (Upper long terminal strip)

COMMONS= relay board commons c3/c4/c5 go to common TM2 pin L on wj200
RESET = relay board A3 goes to TM2 pin 6 on wj200
REVERSE = relay board A4 goes to TM2 pin 2 on wj200
FORWARD= relay board A5 goes to TM2 pin 1 on wj200

On wj200 terminal strip TM2 jumper plc to p24 for sinking source using wj200's internal v24v supply.

VFD Programming settings for acorn relay board switched inputs using VFD 24v powered sinking source A002=01

VFD Alarm signal Acorn Header H1 to VFD termimals TM1 (lower left short terminal strip)
Acorn H1
Acorn IN5 to wj200 AL0
Acorn common to wj200 AL1

VFD programming settings C036=01

once i get it all figured out i will try and make a nice spreadsheet with all the connections, programming values and maybe even a youtube video.

Please do us a courtesy of posting a link to the manual for your drive. That way we don't have to go searching ng for it.

If you are on strictly solar, you may want line reactors and definitely EMI filter protection. My .02

Hey Marty

I have grid power and solar so it should be fine fingers crossed. If i have trouble then i will just have to suck it up and put some extra protection on the line. stuff like that occasionally becomes surplus at work :-)

here is a link to the manual, its a lot to chew on ;-)

I'm just waiting on my transformer from antec to arrive for the drives to finish the control box then i can do a bit of testing :D .

Hi AshG,

I also have the WJ200 2.2kW and it's paired with a CNC Depot S30C spindle. I completed my control / Acorn box and the machine can move around successfully and accurately. But now comes setting up the spindle. I haven't built out my VFD box yet, and admittedly I am feeling a little overwhelmed with how to properly get the Acorn board to talk to and control the VFD. I have the schematics and I've read through the WJ200 manual (seriously) but that has still left me feeling less than confident. Did you ever create that spreadsheet you mentioned? or do a video?

Thanks!

Post a link to your manual. We can try and help with suggestions.
Its a tough time right now for everyone, but I check in now and again.

Here's the link:

To clarify, my main concerns are around the connections between the Acorn board and its relays, and the VFD. Getting power to the VFD and hooking up the three phases to my spindle I'm not needing assistance with, just communication and connection between Acorn and WJ200. Maybe what I'm looking for is a mapping of Acorn connections to the various input jacks on the front of the VFD. I've read the manual but it seems to be written for an audience that is already fluent in this kind of thing, which I am not. Any help or guidance would be really great. thanks!

Yeah, that manual is not typical...
What you need is in CHAPTER 4. Study that along with the attached Generic VFD schematic.
See if it helps.
You will of course have to change the parameters in the drive to enable the features.

This my "initial" take on your VFD terminals:
O= Acorn Analog Ouput +
L= Acorn Analog Ouput- (COM)

1= Forward
2= Reverse
5= Reset Inverter (VFD Reset)
P24= Common for the above inputs (assuming you leave the Inverter set to SOURCE LOGIC, which is OK since you are using the Acorn relay board

AL0 = Acorn COM
AL1 = Acorn Input 5 (SpinOK)*

Pay attention to programming the fault output relay. Read section 4-52 of the manual. You WANT a fault if the VFD has no power OR a fault. These contacts are programmable.

You will have to program the parameters to tell the VFD to look at the inputs rather than the operator keypanel.

Marty

P.S. Its better to start your own build thread rather than tagging on to another poster's topic. I understand why you did, but do your own.

Marty, thank you very much. Very helpful and timely. This was my first ever post so I'm still learning the protocols and etiquette.

Thanks again!

It's OK.
When you start your own build thread, its easier for us to go through the one thread rather than jumping around trying to find your posts.
Hope it helps get you going in the right direction.
