Will this encoder work?

Post by TRM »

Can I use this encoder that is already mounted and belted 1:1 on my lathe? The connector is 18mm x 1.0 thread 9 pin.
If someone recognizes the connector please let me know what type it is so I can buy one.
I found this plug that looks like it may work. https://www.binder-usa.com/products/pow ... %2000%2009

Looks like its differential quadrature, I would assume the 0V is a typo. I don't see a line count though.

OV is the - signal for the 5vdc. Pin 1 looks like it is the 5 VDC +.

If I connected it to acorn is there a way to find out the line count?

Yes!

Even with it not mounted to the machine you can determine the line count. You will need to do the setup in the Wizard to let it know you have a spindle encoder then you will need to wire it up properly to the DB-9 connector. Once that is done, go into the machine setup and find the PID readings.

I'm not able to tell you from memory where the pid readout is but If I was at the mill or lathe I could step through it.

Once you find the PID readings, you can see that one of the axis will have an astrick by it. This is the encoder pid. Turn the encoder exactly one turn and watch for the line count. Turning one exact turn is hard but you can tell what the line count should be and if you need to, make 10 turns and then divide by 10. This will average out the over and under turns.

PID menu from main screen is
F1
F3 (137)
F4

As Dave said, with the encoder connected, turn the shaft to Zero out. Mark the encoder shaft, then turn it one full revolution. It will get you close enough to tell what the count is.

Thanks guys.
Does anyone recognize the plug that will mate up to it?

That is an MS connector, usually there is a part number around the side of the square flange. if you can find it, you can look it up and then find the mating connector

MS stands for "Military Spec"

You don't have to go with that connector, you could remove it, clip the wires, make a cover plate with a strain relieve and just use a 24 gauge stranded twisted pair, 8 conductor shielded cable to solder to the encoder wires and then add the DB9 to the other end.

MS connectors are somewhat pricey unless you find surplus

I'm going to take you advice Marty and wire directly and use a strain relieve.
