Acorn to VFD to Spindle Issue

Post by WaJo »

I have a Leeson motor for my lathe spindle, connected to a Teco L510 VFD, connected to Acorn, run by CNC12. Following Marty's CNC Garage video on this, my bench test works fine, as in the video. Using batteries as the source voltage to the AVI (analog voltage in) on the VFD to set the speed and direction of the spindle, again, everything works. But when I set the VFD to be controlled by external source and try to start the spindle in manual mode in CNC12... clicking the green start spindle button, nothing happens. The spindle does not spin. Maybe I missed something in the VFD settings, but I think that it is set up correctly.

Is there a configuration setting in CNC12 to tell it to send the 0-10v signal to Vout on the Acorn board, ...is this a default function or does something have to be enabled in CNC12? ... i.e., whatever is in the the code, or whatever the manual interface clicked to do, a signal is sent to Vout on the Acorn board by default? It seems like there is no control voltage at the Vout terminal, and so the spindle does not spin.

Did you take it out of AUTO? Click the AUTO/MAN button so the led goes out, then press the green button. All in the spindle control box.

Go watch my latest video where I am working on a Compact 5 CNC lathe. I bench test the VFD and show this.

If you folled my latest video showing how to use the Spindle control panel, then either you have a wiring issue or a VFD programming issue.
Do you have the VFD programmed correctly?
Can you turn it on and off with a jumper from Common to S1? (this would confirm you have the VFD programmed correctly for forward

Provide more info, is it wiring you are having trouble with? Or is it programming you are having trouble with?
When you say benchtest works fine. are you saying the Acorn and your axis drive motors AND the VFD or just your axis drive motors, or just your Acorn to your PC? To me a benchtest is nearly all of the components including the VFD wired to Acorn, as in my latest video.

I use the 510 on my large CNC Knee mill and it does work fine.
Pictures of your VFD wiring and Acorn VFD wiring, and even better, a video clip of what you have and what you are having trouble with would help us help you. We'll try to help get you going.

Got it working, partially. Unwired the limit switches. But now it does not spin in reverse. Went back to the battery test and it does not work, though it did before.

It working. Your battery test pointed me the VFD. It was a wrong setting in the VFD. So, I'm good for now. Thanks for your help.
