Dump persons guide to machine coordinates

Post by Terry1956 »

Hi, ok I am finding the whole machine coordinates thing a problem. With my cnc mill, I just jog the tool to the zero, zero point of the material then just zero out the dro both for the machine coordinates and the part.
However I can’t figure out how to zero the lathe version of C12 . So far I am at the point of jogging the tool to the leading edge of the material I wish to machine. I set the part z axis at 0.00, I set the x axis at the diameter of the material. But because I don’t know how to zero the machine coordinates ,it all goes wrong if I try to start the job.
Can someone please explain in very simple terms the following.
1. Can I set the machine coordinates to aline with the part coordinates. So if I have set z axis at zero, and x at +10 can I set the the same in machine coordinates and start the job. If so how do I do that?
2. I don’t have home switches at the moment and have set the software so it will not ask for a home position. So if I am correct, I just need to set the part coordinate and then the machine coordinates and all will be well. Am I mistaken.

Please answer in very simple terms, I have watched far too many videos, and they don’t answer these questions.
Thanks

Follow chapter 4 Part Setup in the lathe manual and chapter 5 Tool Setup

Coordinate system on a lathe is explained in chapter 1.7

Machine coordinates are helpful in setting travel limits, and tool change spots. It helps to keep things from crashing. You Can set machine home anywhere you want, but you are asking for trouble. Do yourself a favor and put homing sensors on it.

I think I previously offered you my number (via PM) when you were struggling. If I recall you had also posted on a forum looking for an Orac lathe, which I had and tried to make contact but didnt hear back (or someone with the same username). The offer stands, if you need some help, I'm in the UK and happy to help with some basics on WhatsApp or Phone.

Lathe without home is tricky. On a mill, less of a problem.

Thanks to all. Looks like the first step for me is to fit some home switches.
Chaz, sorry for not getting back, family issues which I could not avoid took over my life.
However it would be so nice to just have an easy to understand guide on how to make that first part, without all the add-ons that one can worry about later. I am finding the manual a bit like one for an old video recorder, pages of stuff, but all you need to start with is just the on/off button.
