Limit Switches:

This machine doesn't have them. We have been discussing adding them this morning (location, type, etc.)

What would you recommend? Am I correct in assuming that they are needed for homing on this conversion, unlike the mill we just completed? (Leadshine EL7).

I'm using proximity sensors like these for the gearbox position inputs:

That is what we are looking at using for the axis limits as well, if possible, in order to simplify the parts list, but I'm open to suggestions.

In looking at the spindle brake, are there strong reasons to get the optional braking resistor for the Freq drive, rather than re-using the mechanical brake that this machine is currently fitted with?

We are using an automation direct GS30.

I was planning to just re-use the braking circuit, including the timer, but maybe this is unnecessary with the new controller?

What would you advise?

I would reuse the electromagnetic brake built into the machine. A braking resistor in a vfd will slow you down but will not stop the motor.

Ok, will the Allin1DC eliminate the need for the brake timer? Should I just get rid of that?

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but:

When wiring the VFD, do I connect 'ADC COM' on the Allin1DC to the same Analog Reference used for 'DAC COM' above it (can I jumper them?) or does that get connected elsewhere. I can't find an answer to this in the VFD documentation or on the schematic (just says connect to 'Analog Out Com'.)



Also, update on the Spindle brake discussion earlier:
I realized that the mechanical brake shown in the schematic is for the x-axis, and not for the spindle. I have the control circuit still included in the magnetics cabinet and wired to the same output as shown for the x-axis brake, but I assume I'll want to disconnect this, or else know what configurations I need to change before powering anything up next week. Please advise. We did go ahead and purchase a braking resistor for the VFD.

I did spend some time with your videos before our Mill conversion, which got a Hickory, but I actually haven't revisited them until now. Thanks for all the time you put into these. I'll probably spend some more time with them during the 'setup and calibration' phase.

I have all the connections made for the VFD, but am unsure of whether or not I am able to use "ACM" on our Automation Direct GS30 as both the ground reference for Input and output. I am very close to powering this on, and wanted to share the progress with you, just in case the blue smoke gets out, and I have to go backwards from here.

ACM is the analog common, for both the analog inputs (AI1 & AI2) and the analog output (AO1). See pages 2-31 and 2-37 of the GS30 manual.

ACM is not necessarily the same as "any ground".
