Oak-Yaskawa cable differences

Post by Trucktriage »

Hello all, I am new to the forum, new to centroid, and also new to the world of cnc. Despite all that I decided to buy and retrofit an older Hurco bed mill. It has Yaskawa Sigma 1 drives so after some research an oak seemed like a good fit. I’m very early on in the process but have run into my first obstacle, I purchased the premade oak to yaskawa cables but they do not seem to be compatible with my drives. The cables I received are 50 pin and the 1CN port on my drives are 36 pin, they do appear to be the same style connector just a fair bit smaller. I’m looking for suggestions how to proceed, firstly are these servopacks being speed/torque control the issue? I would like to reuse these, I am not a machinist and this is currently just a hobby and the budget is limited, but I could try to find some different servopacks if that’s a better solution. If I am to furnish my own cables I believe I have some options I found the bare plugs for sale on eBay, I have the original hurco harness with its plugs so I could join the two cables. I also see in the yaskawa manual they made a connector to terminal adapter thou I have no looked for them yet. In any of these 3 cases the wire function descriptions I have do not match pretty much at all between the yaskawa manual and the flying lead diagram besides basic power and grounds. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Ciao Trucktriage,

the drive you have, is a Sigma1 mod. SGDA with 36 pin connector

The Centroid cables are for Sigma 1 SGDB, with 50 pin connector

Below you will find links to download the two manuals with connector configurations.

Using the Oak Yaskawa cable diagram, you will easily find the pin for the SGDA connector

This is the SGDA manual

This is the SGDB manual

Good morning FranzAZP,

Thank you for the response, while I did have those manuals your reply made me relook at the information and I realized I was looking at the flying lead drawing S14531 that does not have the yaskawa wire descriptions when I should have been referencing the one you suggested S14530. Again thank you, I will try to avoid the midnight wiring sessions from here forward.

If you move forward with the SGDA drives, you will have to accept some compromises related to error detection and emergency stop inhibits.

See viewtopic.php?p=80825

For control cables, I would start with the flying-lead cables (or cut the 50-pin connectors off your factory Oak-Yaskawa cables) and solder the 36-pin MDR connectors directly to the cable leads. Splices or terminal breakouts make the connection more vulnerable to noise and interference.

Here is how I wired SGDA drives for velocity-mode control.
