twin table router

Post by larry@weaverwood.net »

I am in the process of retrofitting a twin table Onsrud router with a Hickory control and LS Electric APM-FE22DMK-AD motors (2.2 KW). The wiring schematics show only three drives and motors. Are there schematics for 4 axes? This machine has a rotary carousel tool change on which I plan to install a smaller ES Electric motor and drive. Are there schematics for such tool changers?
I am new to this and would be glad for any help.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Would you mind posting some pictures of the machine?

Does this machine have multiple motors on any of the axes? Is the fourth drive and motor for the tool changer or axis movement?

We'd need more details for the tool carousel to make specific suggestions. Is it a Geneva mechanism (or similar) or does it use the motor to directly index the tools?

We do not have 4 axis or router specific schematics for the LS Electric drives at this time. I'll see about getting some drawn up though.

This picture will show you the twin 4 x 4 tables of my machine. When licked together they make a 4 x 8' table. There are no axes with multiple motors. The fourth axis is for the second table.
Axis X is table 1
Axis U is table 2
Axis Y is the movement of the spindle on the bridge.
Axis Z is the up/down movement of the spindle
Axis A is the rotary tool changer which uses the motor to directly index the tool. This is mounted on a swing arm which moves into position with an air cylinder and the servo motor rotates the carousel tray.
I used the LS Electric 2.2 kw motors for all axes except the tool changer, which is 400W with a 10:1 planetary gear. Axis Z has a brake.

As of right now, I think your best bet for an immediate solution for the carousel is a drive that can index and be controlled from the Hickory PLC outputs like the LS L7 series.

If you can wait, a future CNC12 update will have new firmware for the Hickory that will allow it to directly index certain drives through the EtherCAT chain from the PLC program. The LS iX7NH series supports this kind of operation.
