As Ken stated, those drives are to be wired to the DB25. Centroid even provides a schematic for wiring the drive to Acorn and they DONT wire to the headers like you have done. Those are 5V drives. I'm confused as to why you didn't follow the schematic, you would have saved yourself countless hours of frustration. You'll continue to have problems until you follow the Centroid schematics.

Attached are the versions of the manuals for the drivers I have. There is no reference in them for resistors and they come configured from the factory for 24v. The older version of these drivers apparently were default to 5v. Not sure why one of the drives works at 24v. I will move them over to the DB25 5v connection. The profile in the Acorn Wizard also says to use the screw terminal not the DB25

The profile you selected is for the CL57Y/CL86Y, did you not state in your earlier post that you have the CL86T and CL57T? Not the same drives. Please pay attention to model numbers and schematics so you don't damage your drives or worse, your Acorn.

I use the leadshine DM series for those. It's a good generic 5v Leadshine/stepperonline and works fine

Is there a library of other profiles someplace that has things that match mine? That was the closest profile I could find. I suppose I would have to create my own profile. It seems like those are just a starting place, not sure if they are used at runtime or just to set up some initial parameters

I have been looking all the thru docs again, and just saw that note as well. I suspect that I have fried a couple of my CL86T and and the CL57T stepper drivers. I just ordered some new ones - twice as expensive as when I bought them before :(

Looks like I am going to be spending a bunch of time rewiring my cabinet to 5V. Maybe I will get motivated to do a neater job, but I doubt it

The "standard" profiles are simply a jumping off point for a lot of drives. Many people tweak them from there. You can easily create a "custom" profile just for your drives and save it in the Custom tab.

Start with the Leadshine DM series as Ken stated (that one works for most 5V Leadshine clones) and adjust the parameters from there to your liking. Once things are up and running and you are happy with the performance save that profile.

As for rewiring, you should be doing a neat job because if you have a rats nest of wires criss-crossing everywhere you just induce RFI/EMI in the the wiring and create communication issues that you then have to fix later with more rewiring. Use shielded wire where needed and use best practice for machine wiring or you'll just be inviting the gremlins in. It's your call. :D

Re: Drive Fault on all drives - RESOLVED

Post by dovrosenberg »

I resolved the issues I was having. I moved the wiring from the 24V screw terminals to the DB25 5V and removed the ENA+ and ENA- from my CL86T and CL57T stepper drives. I had to switch the drives from 24V (factory default setting) to 5V using the S3 switch next to the DIP switches. Even though the I had the latest version of the drivers that the docs say fully support 24V, 1 of the 3 CL86T drivers actually worked at 24v properly as expected. 1 seemed to have gotten fried. When I switched to 5v, the one driver that wasnt working started. The CL57T driver was totally non functional at 24V even with the switch set to 24v from the factory. I changed it over to 5V and now it is working. Someone on another Facebook group, said he was using CL86Y and CL57Y drivers at 24V with no problem

Glad you got it sorted out. The 5V/24V switch on the drives simply enables an internal current limiting resistor when using 24V. Those are clearly 5V drives and work on the 5V TTL output of Acorn, not the headers.

Centroid, the manufacturer, spends a lot of time to test and create schematics for a big list of common drives and they are proven to work. Follow Centroid schematics, not some guy on Facebook. :D
