Well I have been gone for a few weeks, but I am back to work today on the CHNC air motor to servo tool turret conversion. As I said earlier I decided to use the original air motor as a platform to connect the turret to my servo motor. I ended up having to make a whole new shaft and decided to make a new end cap to the air motor while I was at it. Here is a picture of the air motor complete with the new shaft. I just have to put it in the machine to determine the final shaft length and then cut the key way in the shaft for my motor coupler. Another pretty good day of progress. The air motor that is no longer an air motor is back in place and the new servo is coupled to it. The turret raises and lowers like it should and all of the stop cushion components have been removed. I am amazed at how little force it takes to rotate the turret once it is raised off of the locks. There are more pictures and info in the album for those who are interested. I am excited, having a servo on the turret instead of the air motor will be a great improvement on the CHNC machines.

Finished wiring the new drive today. Also removed the existing CHNC turret encoder and got the drive and servo tuned using Leadshines Motion Studio software.

Exciting stuff happening here, at least if you are me. I have some motion on the CHNC tool turret. Not quite a tool change I am just verifying my turns per inch using MDI, but it is smooth and quiet.

Well one more hurdle crossed today. I am not much of a tig welder especially on cast aluminum, but I have a couple pretty good grinders and I think the end result will serve the purpose well.
