Cincinnati Hawk Lathe Conversion
I picked up a Cincinnati Hawk 150 mechanically in perfect condition at a local College for scrap price. I’ve had it for about a year now and nothing but trouble out of the acromatic controller. It’s getting to be 1000$ here and 2500$ there to keep it running. I’m going to start my conversion on it. I have a couple questions to get started. I know it’s a couple different recommended servo drivers for the hickory, but are there any favored brands in the list? Next the spindle drive gearing is not a 1 to 1 ratio. I’ve not calculated the ratio but I know it’s not 1to1. Does the hickory have anyway to compensate for this as I’d like to have this machine for threading part.

Re: Cincinnati Hawk Lathe Conversion
hello.
drives we have the most experience with are
yaskawa is the best.
leadshine is affordable alternative https://shopcentroidcnc.com/shop/cnc-se ... e-package/
Estun's work as well but you can't get them as of late.
Innovance work and look to be available internationally.
you can purchase both leadshine and yaskawa directly from Centroid.
keep in mind you can't just buy any ethercat drive/motor, they have to be tested by Centroid and validated for use with Hickory.

Re: Cincinnati Hawk Lathe Conversion
the spindle motor can be belted at any ratio.
it is the spindle encoder! that has to be at a 1:1 connection with the spindle.
Hickory using the Encoder to position for threading. it follows the encoder. works fantastic.

Re: Cincinnati Hawk Lathe Conversion
Can use the current spindle drive or will I need to retrofit to another brand?

Re: Cincinnati Hawk Lathe Conversion
You should be able to use any spindle drive as long as it has 0V - 10V or -10V to 10V analog input.

Re: Cincinnati Hawk Lathe Conversion
looks like that is 6 n-m cont torque?
frame size of this motor?
probably would want to go with the 1.3 kw leadshine in this case.

Re: Cincinnati Hawk Lathe Conversion
what happens when you disconnect the x axis motor from the screw?
